New Video: Stylish Family Friendly Design

8_22_14

Tips for a Stylish Family Friendly Design:

1)    Keep your larger pieces neutral to allow you flexibility to switch out your accent colors more easily in the future.

2)    Use an upholstered ottoman as a cocktail table.  This is great for family’s with little ones.  There are no sharp edges for them to get hurt on.  Leather is super durable & you won’t worry when your kids or hubby kick their feet up on it.

3)    Make it unique.  The lamp shades on these lamps can be painted any Benjamin Moore paint color.  It’s a great way to make a statement & bring color into your space.  Feel like changing your accent color in the future?  Just paint the shades to go with your new palette.

4) Play with pattern on your chairs, pillows & accessories.  Polka dots are the latest pattern trend.  We love this sophisticated version on the chairs we’ve used in this vignette.

Get inspired to start your family room makeover today!  Everything featured in our set on GMT on Friday is now in stock at IBB!

Sneak Peek: Spring 2011 ~ Fresh Fashionable Fabrics

I just love it when an upholstery line we carry just “gets it”.  Do you know what I mean?  Yesterday, the designers at IBB were all treated to a sneak peek of what we’ll see at market in High Point in April from CR Laine.  If you haven’t taken a look at CR Laine in the last few years, you will be pleasantly surprised with their divine transformation.  They’ve taken fresh to a whole new level & are quickly gaining clout as color trend setters for the industry.

Take a peek at some of my favorites being introduced for Spring 2011

Gray is a fabulous neutral & they’re pulling out the punches with this color scheme.  I love the pop of the pinkish honeysuckle  red (2011 Color of the Year).  It brings the traditional floral print to life.  The traditional gray houndstooth accent fabric gets a fresh update by taking on a larger scale in pattern.  Check out the metallic snakeskin print in honeysuckle.  Now this fabric would add some instant glam to your space & really kick it up a notch.  I can see it on some fun small bench ottomans or used to cover a fabulous accent chair.  Instant statement piece.  Oh, and by the way ~ it’s a microfiber!  Yep, that’s right!  Style & durability.  Hello, can you say family friendly fashions for your home?  I told you they “get it”!!!  The fabrics in this scheme will also go with the yummy Sunbrella velvet sofa I showed you on Good Morning Texas last week.

So, last year’s color of the year was turquoise & if you’re a loyal reader of the DD blog, then you know that I am a HUGE fan of turquoise.    I really can’t get enough of the color.  Pairing a lemon or sunny yellow with it creates one of my favorite color combinations.  It just feels so fresh & happy to me.  I’m using  these colors in my family room in my new home.  I love this fabric from CR Laine.  Yes, the pattern is a coral design but this certainly doesn’t mean you have to use it in a beach house.  It would be gorgeous on pillows or a pair of chairs.  How about on the chair below?  Instead of the green on the wood frame, let’s accent it with turquoise.  Did you know that CR Laine will let you pick ANY Benjamin Moore paint color to apply to ANY of their wood frames?  Or, maybe we cover the chair in a turquoise solid & use the the turquoise & yellow coral pattern as the fabric for the loose back pillow.  Talk about options.  My fellow design devotees, we could have some fun here!!!

I hope you all enjoyed today’s sneak peek!  We head to High Point for market in April, so stay tuned for more updates.  Enjoy your weekend design devotees!

*Like what you see & want more?  CR Laine is available at IBB Design Fine Furnishings.  Contact one of our designers for more information.

Project Renovation: Oscarlicious Master Bedroom

That will be the word of the day ~ Oscarlicious!  Why, you ask?   As far as design inspiration goes, I was particularly drawn to two dresses at the 2011 Academy Awards worn by Gwyneth Paltrow & Hilary Swank.   The show stopping designer gowns sum up the modern glamour style I’m seeking to portray in our master bedroom.  They instantly sent me into a creative frenzy when I saw them.

I’ve been planning this dream bedroom of mine in my head for years & I’m finally taking the leap to create it.  Not overdone.  Not heavy.  Simple elegance & sophistication that exudes glamour.  Touches of traditional combined with modern options & fabulous finishes.  I love the metallic effect that both of these dresses offer & the textures of the fabrics are to die for!  The colors are even in the range of the color palette I have chosen for our bedroom.  Platinum, nickel, cream & gold are the stars in the room.  I’ve painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s Pale Oak & our trim color is Benjamin Moore’s Could White.  We have great windows in our sitting area & the room gets fantastic natural light.

So, let me give you a sneak peek at my game plan.

This is the bed I designed for my husband & I.  It is my dream bed!  I have been searching for a bed like this my whole life!  No joke!  I worked with CR Currin ( a line we carry at IBB) to tweak one of their new beds to carry out my vision.  It’s upholstered in a chenille tweed from Kravet.  It’s hard to tell from the photo but there are metallic threads woven into the fabric.  The posts are covered in a smoky antique mirror & the bed is finished in a stunning silver leaf.  The factory sent me a photo of it when it was done.  It is shipping this week & I could not be more excited to get it into our room!

To set off our gorgeous bed, I wanted to find something really spectacular to accent the bed wall.  When I saw this wallpaper from Albert Van Luit, my jaw dropped!  It was just the thing to do this bed justice.  It’s a natural grass cloth wallpaper with a large scaled Damask pattern created by silver & gold leaf.   The texture is delicious.  This has my name written all over it!  It makes a powerful statement, so I’m not covering the entire room in it.  That would be crossing over into the overdone category & that’s not what I’m going for.  It will be a fabulous focal point behind the bed.  It’s brand new to the collection, so it won’t be in until the end of March.  Good things come to those who wait…  I’m dying to get it up in the room!

Lighting for the room will take on a more modern flair.  I love these selections juxtaposed with the Damask wallpaper.  The lamps I’ve chosen are from Global Views & very grand in scale.  They will sit like sculptural art on our nightstands.  The inside of the mercury glass base lights up & shows off it’s illustrious qualities.  It’s simply magnificent.  You can light just the base (romantic ambiance), just the lamp (task lighting), or both at the same time (you get the best of both worlds!).  The chandelier from Fine Art Lamps will hang over our bed.  The photo shows the design of the chandelier.  I’ve ordered it in a silver leaf finish with a translucent mica shade & metal frame.  It will showcase the silver & gold finishes being used in the room in one piece.

I hope you enjoyed today’s sneak peek into my house!  I can’t wait to share the room with you when I get it all done.  Mixing finishes in a room can give you a brilliant interior.  You just have to find the balance.  Get inspired & go make your room Oscarlicious!

Dreaming of Spring Renewal

Baby, it’s cold outside!  Freezing is more like it.  Much of the country is facing fierce winter storms.  Many in Dallas & surrounding suburbs have been snowed in since Monday night & the kiddos are enjoying almost an entire week off due to arctic temperatures & impossible road conditions.  We’ve had plenty to keep ourselves busy around here though since we just moved into our new house this weekend.  However, cabin fever is really starting to set in with me.

I’m dreaming of the sensory pleasantries of spring.  Bright colors, fresh flowers blooming & temperatures that call for margaritas on the patio.  Spring is a time for renewal.  One project that is on my to-do list is to make over our patio furniture.  When I bought it, I played it safe with neutral fabrics because I just wasn’t sure what I wanted out there & I had to get seating asap because we really enjoy our patio time during the warmer months in Dallas.  Don’t get me wrong.  There is nothing wrong with neutral.  I’ve loved these chairs since day one.  But, if you’re looking for an area to experiment with pops of color, an outdoor space is perfect!  Nature’s beautiful colors found in plants, flowers & trees will help balance strong colors outdoors.

When it comes to outdoor fabrics, color is usually offered in abundance.  I’m particularly smitten with the famous fashion designer Trina Turk’s line for Schumacher.  Ever since the launch of her collection, the amazing patterns and vivid colors have danced their way through my imagination and onto my wish list.  With the huge success of her first collection, it’s no surprise that fans across the world were giddy with the recent announcement of her second collection.  Check it out here.

The chairs & granite fire pit table are from OW Lee, a line we carry at IBB Design Fine Furnishings.  They are beyond comfy & we often sit out there for hours hanging out with our friends watching the kids play.  Other than giving the boring beige a fresh new vibe, the chairs really don’t need recovering.  They have held up substantially over the years.  But, alas, it is time to breathe new life into these chairs & give our a backyard the fun pop of color it deserves.

So, here is the game plan.  Turquoise, cobalt blue & citron will set the tone for the color palette.  Fun patterns will create a playful experience in our outdoor setting.  And, finally, those fabulous fabrics from Trina Turk will work their way into my home.  Yippee!  Here are my selections from her collection.

I’m going to kick it up a notch with some contrasting fabrics for the welt cords & buttons on the tufting.  The fabrics are ordered.  I can wait to get them over to my upholsterer & see how it all turns out.  Stay tuned for updates!

**Important Tip!  When having outdoor furniture recovered you must not only be mindful that the fabrics are outdoor friendly, but also the thread used to sew the fabrics together.  Regular thread will rot very quickly in the outdoor elements & your beautifully recovered pieces will soon be in shambles!**

C is for Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie:  a form of European decoration imitating techniques and motifs of the Orient; especially fashionable in the late 17th century and revived during the Regency, or as many say ~ a French term meaning “Chinese~esque”

While researching for this blog post, I stumbled upon a blog devoted entirely to Chinoiserie called Chinoiserie Chic. It’s full of all sorts of eye candy featuring “Chinese~esque” designs.  You really should check it out!

A Fabric That Rocks!

Even if you’re not a huge fan of the Beatles, you probably instantly recognize the iconic group pictured on this fabric.  It’s the photo from the back cover of their album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. This fabric caught my eye not once, but twice during visits to two different showrooms at the High Point International Home Furnishings Market earlier this week.

Century used it in a contemporary setting.  They used the Beatles print for the back of this bench seat & contrasted it with black leather & a coordinating linen.   The scheme is a blend of contrasting neutrals and textures.  They paired it with a white lacquered end table, a fun black geometric screen & large round end table with a chrome pedestal base.  The round table is arranged in front of the bench to serve as a small dining table.  You could even use two of them in front of the bench to create a lounge feeling in a game room, media room, or hip home office or study.

Over at Vanguard, they took a more traditional approach.  The same fabric in primary colors covers a cocktail ottoman with leather, nail head trim & an exposed wood base.  An ottoman like this could add spunk in front of a gameroom or media room sofa.  Or, if someone in your house is a huge Beatles fan or memorabilia collector, this would be perfect addition to a study with book or display cases housing their collection.

I have a lot more fun finds from market to come, so stay tuned!

Is your home in tune to social media?

CRLaineTwiiterfabric
Talk about being socially savvy & totally with it!  Furniture manufacturer CR Laine has hit the height of uber (or should I say cyber?) creativity.  As part of their new spring line of fabrics, set to debut at April’s High Point Furniture Market,  they are offering a fun new pattern.  An obvious ode to social media giant, Twitter, the pattern is called Twitter Spring.  It features a fun branchy design with bird silhouettes.
CRLaineTwiiterfabricScheme

Here’s the patterns they suggest pairing with the fun twitterliscious print.  A soft corduroy called Wuzzy Oatmeal and an awesome geometric called Gather Round the Stone.

Attention powers that be at Twitter headquarters ~ I see a make-over in your future!  And, for all of those hip social media experts, it’s time to integrate some of that social savvyiness into your home.

Terrifically Turquoise

I’ve been geting lots of e-mails about how to use the 2010 color of the year, turquoise, in your home.  So, I thought I would post ideas as I run across them.  I’ll be doing a segment on the fabulous color on GMT this Friday, so make sure & tune in for that as well.

Fabrics:

From light to bright, these shades of the rich color would add a pop of fabulosity to a neutral decor.  Use them for pillows, re-cover a chair, upholster a wall or use them for draperies.

Looking for Durable Fabrics?

Shay,
I watched a show on GMT (quite awhile ago now) where you showed a sofa upholstered in a “new” leather like material.   I think you said that it would be very durable.  Can you tell me what it was called and a little more about it.  Also if you have used it & whether your customers/clients have been satisfied.

Thanks.
Mary – Arlington, TX

Dear Mary,
Thank you so much for your question!  I get questions about how to find durable fabrics all of the time.  It’s an issue on most people’s minds.    The leather like material you are referring to is called Brisa.  It is a unique man made polyurethane fabric with a specially designed ventilation system that allows it to breathe.  The textile manufacturer, Gulf Fabrics,  simulates the look & feel of natural leather by creating a discreet grain pattern.  With over 200,00 double rubs, Brisa is known for it’s high durability.  That’s more than 30% more durable than what is required to be considered a “heavy duty” durable fabric.  It comes in a wide array of wonderful designer colors.  Here are a few of my favs:

Presently, Century Furniture is the only furniture manufacturer who is using Brisa.  We have had several of their pieces in Brisa at IBB. I have heard only great feedback so far from clients.  It’s as soft & supple as a really high grade quality leather.  One of my clients, who bought a sofa with the cushions covered in Brisa, says that their dog gets up on it all of the time & they haven’t had any issues.  They also have 3 kids, so durability was a huge priority for them.

Here’s a few more facts about Brisa:

  1. Clinically proven to be more resistant to temperature changes than vinyl & leather.
  2. Stays cooler than genuine leather in warm weather situations.
  3. Resists cold weather stiffening & cracking.
  4. Exceeds 200,000 double rubs
  5. Cleans effortlessly with soap & water.
  6. Most stains can be lifted with with alcohol-based solutions Fantastik or Formula 409

Finding the perfect Fabrics

Kravet, one of my very favorite “go to” fabric lines had a wonderful post today on their blog about selecting the right fabrics for upholstery.  Even as a design professional, I found the knowledge & advice they provided in the blog post to be very valuable.  It’s a worthwhile read for anyone thinking about or in the process of selecting new or re-covering upholstery in their home.  Read their post on upholstery fabric tips here.

Kravet has an extensive library of fabrics to choose from.  They really do have something for everyone at just about every price point.  You may remember me telling you about their new KravetSmart program featuring a more cost conscious approach.

They are also very well known for their ingenious collaborations with interior designers such as Candice Olson, Barclay Butera, Alexa Hampton, Barbara Barry, Calvin Klein & many more.

However, the pièce de résistance for me is their Guaranteed in Stock books.  These books are a lifeline for me when I’m trying to meet a quick deadline for clients.  Case in point ~ I had a rather distressing moment at my own home last week.  Upon “fluffing” my formal living room in preparation for dinner party guests, I discovered that my sweet sweet dog had decided to make my living room chairs her daily place of resting, licking paws & other doggy propensities.  The cushions were in shambles 🙁  With our holiday party less than 2 weeks away, I had to think fast!  I went straight to one of Kravet’s guaranteed in stock books that contained my home’s color palette & selected the perfect material to begin the resurrection of my beautiful chairs.  I had the farbic in hand 3 days later.  My amazing upholsterer will have them back to me on Thursday, leaving me 2 days to spare until our party.  Whew!  Looks like Sassy (my sweet sweet dog) is giving me living room chairs for Christmas 😉

Finding the perfect fabrics can take time.  Follow the advice of professionals in the design industry or work with a professional designer to help you find fantastic fabrics for your home.

Lovely Lee Jofa

So, I happened upon this stunning new fabric by Lee Jofa the other day while pulling fabrics for a client…

I instantly fell in love with all of the rich jewel tones and the gorgeous pattern.  My mind was racing with ideas of where & how I could use this insanely fabulous fabric.  Master bedroom drapery panels or bedding?  OMG, this would be awesome in a family room because of it’s bright happy color palette & eye catching pattern.  So many options!!!  SO, in true Designer Detective form, I whisked out my trusty iphone to snap a photo because I just HAD to share this with all of you.  It’s funny how something so fresh, new & lovely can get a designer’s heart racing!

New Fabrics for Fall

The temperature is dropping & the kiddos are back in school.  Before you know it, you’ll be sitting in front of your fireplace with a nice cup of hot cocoa.  Fall is here!  I love fall and everything that represents it.  This time of year, I use a home fragrance around my house called Harvest Spice.  It’s a plug in that I fell in love with the year my daughter was born & I’ve used it ever fall ever since.

Fall colors are warm, inviting & cozy.  Schumacher’s line of fall fabrics for 2009 vividly represent the best of fall.  From intricate paisleys to lush palampores (a tree of life design) the collection offers something for everyone.  Here’s a sneak peek at some of my favs.

Love this bright bold paisley.  I’m also a fan of red & gold together.  Reds & golds seem to offer a timeless tradition for color palettes.  The design of this paisley is based off of an antique pattern.  Bravo Schumacher!  Love it!

I love the muted colors used in this version of the Paisley pattern.  Very soft & subtle.  It doesn’t scream paisley at you.  This fabric would make fabulous draperies or bedding!

I could see this on a pair of carved wood chairs with a rich brown finish or on pillows for a sofa for an added pop of color.

Candice Olson=Divine Fabrics!

Candice Olson

In case you haven’t heard, Kravet carries a fabulous line of fabrics from famed interior designer, Candice Olson.  You may recognize her from her hit HGTV show Divine Design.

Candice is probably my favorite tv interior designer.  I can really identify with her design style.  I don’t think I have ever seen a room of hers that I did not like.   So, needless to say, I am a HUGE fan of her fabric line!  The fabrics offer some really rich textures, detailing & even a few very cool & very well done metallics.  I am thinking about using a few in my master bedroom.  There are so many great coordinates that it’s so hard to decide!  I’m really drawn to the black, white & sea blue color palettes.  The line features several in this palette.  One even has tiny pearls sewn into the fabric.  I could totally see that on a few accent pillows to make a bed super luxurious.

Check some of them out & let me know what you think.

Yellow Fever

Yellow is so energizing & happy that I’m just bursting while writing this post.  Doesn’t yellow make you happy just thinking about it?  Think sunflowers, mimosas, baby chickies, a warm sunny day…

Yellow can do so much for the soul and with hundreds of variations of the shade, it can be worked into just about any home.  My bedroom growing up as a kid was yellow, blue & white.  I LOVED it!  My room was always so bright & happy.  Because of it’s balancing and harmonious properties, yellow can be combined with so many colors to make a lovely color palette.  (blue & yellow, orange & yellow, green & yellow, black & yellow, chocolate brown & yellow, the possibilities are endless)

You may remember, back in December, that Pantone announced Mimosa (a warm sexy shade of yellow) as the color of the year for 2009.

www.elle.com

Open your eyes & you’ll notice that yellow is just about everywhere these days.  Kate Hudson is wearing a fun, flirty yellow dress on the February cover of Elle.  Michelle Obama wowed crowds in a stunning Isabel Toledo “lemongrass” yellow suit for the Inauguration yesterday.

As home fashions often mirror runway fashions, yellow is popping up in furnishings and fabrics all over the world.  On a recent fabric hunting spree, I came across a wide range of gorgeous yellow fabrics.  From traditional styles to contemporary, the cheery color is making a big impact.

A sampling of yellow from my recent fabric hunting spree

So, cheers to Pantone for choosing such a celebratory color like Mimosa for the color of the year.  Now, pop the bubbly & go make your home happy!

Fabulous Fall Fabrics!

Fall inspires beautiful colors and gorgeous fabrics containing them!  Schumacher has some of the prettiest new fabrics out in their Fall 2008 line.  Check them out! They’re known for their classic and innovative designs and this season’s line is no exception.  I love the combination of blue & orange.  They pair so perfectly together.  What’s even better about their line is that they are environmentally conscious and committed to producing green fabrics.  Go Schumacher!!!

Hot House Flowers 174031 – Spark may be my absolute favorite from the line.  They’ve used it on a pillow in the ad to the left.  I can’t wait to use it!
