Design with Meaning

I love it when the magic of design comes together for a client and brings out a deep connection between their life & their home. Today, I’m offering you a sneak peek inside a recent installation for one of my clients. It’s a gorgeous home. It’s been such a treat to work with this family. Her husband is a very talented custom builder & they both have impeccable taste. Our collaboration has brought forth some beautiful fresh results. Below are a few photos I snapped with my iPhone as we were installing some of their wallpapers & drapery treatments. The Designer’s Guild paper we chose for their catering kitchen captured my client’s heart & she couldn’t wait to get it installed. The blue hydrangeas in the bold & colorful floral pattern reminded her of her late mother & she knew she would enjoy spending time in there each day.

View from the catering kitchen looking into the laundry room. You see a small glimpse of the fun Martyn Lawrence Bullard paper we used in there. More on that in another post…

I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek into my project! There’s much more to do so stay tuned for more updates!

Embrace Color!

maryhellen-bio

Don’t be afraid of color!  Have no fear, bring in the color for fresh and fun cheer!!

You see vibrant colors and room combinations all the time and may find yourself saying, “Wow! This is way too contemporary or loud!” Finding that balance and sophisticated way of pulling in color can be a challenge and tend to make you shy away. Embrace it, go for it!

DLP_9616

Use color in coffee table books stacked on an end table or centrally located on the cocktail table.   Have some fresh flowers cut and simply stemmed in a pretty vase.  Fresh flowers in a room will always bring a smile to your face!

Pull in a few, or even a single fun and colorful pillow on your sofa or chair. Remember, a little goes a long way so those few simple elements can transition a room from flat to fun in a matter of minutes!!

5724SW-FamilyDetailsmaller

Feeling even more adventurous?   Opt for a bold piece of artwork with color or a shade of paint to brighten up a wall.  A great piece of art can really set a room off.  In an all neutral setting, a bold colorful piece of art could serve as the stand out element to create a WOW factor!

GBG-0805

So, embrace color & take a risk.  Whether a small pop or a bold powerful statment, just remember to have fun & surround yourself with things you love!

2013 Pantone Color of the Year Announced!

Pantone announced this morning that 2013’s color of the year will be Emerald. “A vivid, verdant green, enhances our sense of well-being further by inspiring insight, as well as promoting balance and harmony.” Sounds great to me!

While I personally tend to be more of a bluesy type of girl (crushing on navy, 2010’s Color of the Year turquoise & everything in between), I’m definitely jumping on board with this jewel tone beauty.

20121206-101016.jpg
Remember, when I showed you this gorgeous jade cabinet from John Richard that I found at market? I fell so hard for it that I ordered it for my own home. Green definitely made it’s mark at the Fall 2012 High Point Home Furnishings Market.

20121206-101809.jpgDesigners & industry peeps went bananas for this malachite fabric from Robert Allen (seen here at Wesley Hall).

So, how should we implement this beautiful hue into our homes? Is it safe to paint a room this color? I say “Yes!”. Thom Filicia lacquered the walls of the entry of the Kipps Bay Showhouse in a breathtaking emerald green. It was spectacular! Wesley Hall features this stunning display of color on their website.

20121206-103506.jpg
In smaller doses or as an accent: Just a few days ago, I posted Kravet’s new ad for Jonathan Adler on instagram as something that is inspiring me right now. I love how Jonathan made a skirt for this console out of an emerald green fabric. The colors in this vignette are so well balanced.

20121206-103625.jpg

“It’s also the color of growth, renewal and prosperity – no other color conveys regeneration more than green.” With richly saturated colors like emerald on the scene, I see a very prosperous year ahead!

Go Wild!

Hello my design devotees!  I’m working from home on this dreary Monday Dallas morning.  One of my little princesses is home sick.  I’m sourcing for a couple of different projects I am working on right now & I came across this photo I had saved in my “Style File” on my home computer.  There are so many things I love about this!  For starters, the chest is covered in zebra hair on hide & tricked out with silver nail heads that define this yummy piece.  The top is covered in glass to ensure a safe place to set your accessories, lamps, etc.  The mirror above the chest is so fun & really makes a gorgeous contrasting statement to the mustard yellow wall color.  If mustard yellow walls scare you, you’ll be happy to know that this ensemble would be just as chic on a crisp white wall.  Small infusions of color help tie this chic setting up in a pretty little package.  The turquoise lamp &  sunny yellow gourd vases say “Hello!” with just the right amount of energy to accessorize the space.

Want this look in your home?  Contact an IBB designer today.  All items pictured are available at IBB Design Fine Furnishings.

Video: See the Color of the Year in Action!

We’re kicking off the new year with some bold color!  Friday on Good Morning Texas, I unveiled the color of the year for 2011 and showed a few ways you could incorporate it into your space.  Check out the segment here.  So, are you ready to get down with honeysuckle?  What do you think of Pantone’s choice for the 2011 color of the year?

2011 is Tickled Pink!

If you follow me on Twitter, then you probably already know that the 2011 color of the year is Honeysuckle.  I announced it after receiving the press release from Pantone back in December.  The reddish pink hue was selected by Pantone, the global authority on color, as the “It” color for 2011.  While I think the color is fabulous, I think it has it’s limitations when it comes to interior design. Although, I could see interior designer Jonathan Adler having some fun with this color.   It’s vibrant & it’s bold.  I foresee this being more of an accent color than a color one would want to live with in abundance.  I think my husband would straight up give me the *side eye* if I told him we were painting any room in our house this color or using this color for our family room sofa fabric.  That wouldn’t fly in my house & certainly not in most of my clients homes.

Where it could work in abundance:
1) Teenage girl’s room
2) A fun vibrant nursery
3) In the home of a very creative person with a playful side that most likely lives alone
4) a very chic & girly closet (see Barbie’s closet below)

jonathan adler, honeysuckle, 2011 color of the year, pink, pink interiors Colors to pair Honeysuckle with:
1) Gray ~ any shade of gray would be breathtaking with the color!  Gray is a fabulous neutral and can definitely take on the task of grounding this “look at me” shade of pink.
2) White ~ for a fresh approach, contrast this color with a bright white.  Honeysuckle would really “POP” against a white like Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White or Gardenia.
3) Turquoise ~ The color of the year for 2010!  This 2 colors would be fabulous together!
4) Black ~ Black would also act as a grounding color for Honeysuckle

Where to use it as an accent:
1) Art
2) Pillows
3) a rug
4) lamp

Check out Honeysuckle in action in some of these interiors!

ABC’s of Design: A is for Accessories

Accessories are like jewelry for your home.  Without them, your home will feel naked & as if something is missing.  Check out a few of my favorite budget friendly accessories that I showcased on GMT last Friday.

When setting your budget for your room design, make sure to leave ample room for the accessories.  Accessories include rugs, lamps, art & decorative items that help tie your whole look together.  A good rule of thumb is to allow 1/3 of your overall budget for accessories.  You may end up spending more if you find a few items that you just can’t live without.  Or, you may end up spending less if you take your time to find really good deals.  Whatever the case, it’s a good idea to set money aside to complete your room’s look.

A few quick pointers to help you get you started:
*Pairings &  groupings of items can help create balance & symmetry in your room.

*Remember size & scale: choose items that are in proportion with your furnishings.  Small items will quickly get lost on a larger piece & larger items will overwhelm a smaller piece.

*Vary the height of items by using books to stack accessories.  Height variations add visual interest & allow your eye to peruse the space with a steady flow.

*Make it personal:  Pick up treasures on your travels that can be used as accessories in your home.  Displaying items that are meaningful help tell a story about you & your family in your space.

Can you over do it?  Absolutely!  You don’t need to cover every inch of wall or table top space with art & other accessories.  Less really is more.

Carefully select items that help relate to the color story & style of your room.  A pair of lamps, a fabulous piece of art & some unique blown glass  may be all you need to dress up a console for your entry or family room.

*Top photo is from IBB Design Fine Furnishings & bottom photo is from the home of an IBB client.

Yummy Yellow & Gorgeous Gray!

You may remember that last year’s color of the year was Mimosa, a warm sunny shade of yellow.  At IBB, we love color.  There’s nothing better than seeing neutrals come alive with beautiful pops of color.  Yellow can instantly make a home feel bright & welcoming.

The color combo of yellow paired with the very chic neutral gray is quickly catching on as one of the most sought after color palettes.  Our model team executed the gorgeous duo on a recent project in Houston, led by IBB designer Susan Neff.  Take a peek inside the family room…

The tufted ottoman coffee table is by Aidan Gray.  I love the shelf at the bottom that allows for extra storage for books, magazines, or a basket to hide your remotes.  Pillows with yellow & gray prints make a splash on the sofa & wing chairs.

(Click on the photo to enlarge)
The neutral stone gray wing back chairs are by Century.   The art over the fireplace may be my absolute favorite part of the room.  It brings so much life & color to the space & really draws your eye up.

We used a lively yellow & gray print from Duralee on the drapery panels which were designed by our drapery designer Gilda Wood.  The breakfast table is also by Aidan Gray.

Sizzling Summer Colors

The kiddos will soon be out of school & begging to play in the pool all day everyday to beat the heat.  If you’re looking for inspiration for your home’s color palette, why not consider a few sizzling summer colors?  Last week on GMT, we chatted about one of my all time favorite color combinations ~ Turquoise & Tangerine.  It sounds so chic just rolling off your tongue, but when you combine the two hues with crisp whites or other neutrals it instantly satisfies your need for exceptional eye candy.  Whenever I’m around the powerful color duo, I dream of sitting on a beach in the Caribbean drinking a Hibiscus Martini.

Watch the segment here to get a few ideas on incorporating these summer inspired colors into your home.

Wallcoverings that Wow!

If you have yet to be informed, let me dazzle you with some exciting news… Wallpaper is back & with a vengeance I must say!  I asked my good friend Shelly Rosenberg to give us her take on some simply stylish wall coverings.

Shelly’s take:
I have always had a soft spot for anything Asian. And now, I have discovered the best reason to fawn…the Chinese invented wallpaper!  The first rice wallpapers go back as far as 200 BC!!  The Orient has a unique form of ornamentation. The motifs are often serene and organic. I especially love the subtle suggestion of movement in the two modern patterns below.

In honor of our 2010 Color of the Year’ and this month’s feature, I will delight you with a bit more of turquoise and her cousins… Any powder room becomes exquisite wrapped in a Tiffany-box blue floral like this one above. And can you imagine the pleasure this dogwood  scene would give guests in your dining room?

As much as I adore the traditional elegance of a tried-and-true paper, there is much fun to be had in this medium. Choose any era in modern history and you can have a paper that speaks its language! I grew up with a very chic mother who had our entire home wrapped in the ever-popular 1980s flamestitch! And it’s still HOT!

Many of you are nervous to commit, I know, but the pleasure is so beyond what the hesitation is worth! Why wallpaper? It can anchor an entire design scheme- take a little piece that makes you swoon and have your designer build a room around it! Have an architectural element that has you baffled? Disguise it! If you just cannot use the paste, frame a fabulous find and stare at its beauty! Search the web for examples of designer wall coverings. But, find the best and most unique eye candy through your favorite interior designer. Delicious.

Scene Stealer: Sensuous Sofa

Almost every day I see an item or fabulous home furnishing that arrives at IBB & my mind starts rolling on where & how to use it.  So, I’m creating a new section on the blog called “Scene Stealers”.  Let it serve as inspiration to you for your home or interior project.  I’ll start with one uber-fabulous piece that steals the show & give you my “suggested pairings” to create a sensational interior around it.

Today’s scene stealer starts with a sensuous sofa.   I have literally been drooling over this stunning leather sofa by Hancock & Moore ever since I saw their ad featuring it.  Isn’t it just delicious?  I’m not sure what sends my heart racing more; the fabulous shade of teal that gives it an edge or the tufting that gives it a classic feel.   This sexy sofa is what all other sofas should aspire to be ~ a real statement piece.

Suggested Pairings:

How about pillows or even a pair of chairs out of this botanical fabric by Schumacher?  You’ve just kicked your color palette into high gear!  From tangerine to canary, we now have  lots of room to play!

Time to add a casegood.  This French Key secretary by Global Views adds style & workspace to your room.  This piece is perfect for your great room or formal living area.  Depending on how your room is laid out, this could go on a wall opposite the sofa or even angled in a corner.

Brass Fleur de lis wall sconce by Global Views.  Yes!  Brass is back & in a beautiful way!  These sconces are stunning and at 42.5″ tall they have a great large scale.  I’d place one on each side of the secretary in this room.  Or, how about one on either side of a fabulous piece of art above the sofa?

Let’s add a fun chair to sit with the secretary.  This is one of my absolute favorites.  It’s the Alexandra chair from Hickory Chair.  I don’t mind mixing finishes, so I think the chippy white finish would work great.  However, if you want to go darker use a similar dark oak finish to that of the secretary.  If you want to play with one of my favorite color combinations, I suggest using one of Kravet’s fabrics for the chair back & cushion.  The top linen fabric is 27591 – 12.  The bottom Damask pattern is 24205.24.

Voila!  Now, you have a few key pieces to begin to make your room into something quite remarkable.

Sneak Peek Saturday: Bathtime Fun!

Today’s Sneak Peek Saturday is from a super fun project I’m working on right now.  We’re converting this vintage claw foot bathtub into a fun reading area for the family’s kiddos.  The adjoining bedroom is being set up as an uber-cool playroom.   Since the bathtub will never be used for its genuine purpose, we felt conflicted to let something so fun just lie there useless.  So, I had an artist paint the exterior of the tub in a British flag motif & we’re making a huge comfy cushion to line the interior of the bathtub.  Finally, we’ll add lots of plush pillows to ensure lots of comfort for hours of lounging & reading in a totally cool space.  I can’t wait to show you the finished product!

Is your home in tune to social media?

CRLaineTwiiterfabric
Talk about being socially savvy & totally with it!  Furniture manufacturer CR Laine has hit the height of uber (or should I say cyber?) creativity.  As part of their new spring line of fabrics, set to debut at April’s High Point Furniture Market,  they are offering a fun new pattern.  An obvious ode to social media giant, Twitter, the pattern is called Twitter Spring.  It features a fun branchy design with bird silhouettes.
CRLaineTwiiterfabricScheme

Here’s the patterns they suggest pairing with the fun twitterliscious print.  A soft corduroy called Wuzzy Oatmeal and an awesome geometric called Gather Round the Stone.

Attention powers that be at Twitter headquarters ~ I see a make-over in your future!  And, for all of those hip social media experts, it’s time to integrate some of that social savvyiness into your home.

Video: My top 5 favorite chairs right now!

If you’re looking for that special something to liven up your decor, a fabulous chair or pair of chairs can easily do the trick!  I recently highlighted my top 5 favorite chairs of the moment for Good Morning Texas.

Watch the video here.

Favorite Chair #1

This leather & hair on hide upholstered chair with antique brass nailhead trim would work wonderfully in a study featuring a rich warm brown color palette.

Favorite Chair #2

I LOVE this jewel tone beauty from John Richard!  The rich colors paired with gold leaf detail make this chair such a luxurious treat!  This has been a very popular chair at IBB.

Favorite Chair #3

Now, you all know that I am a sucker when it comes to a fabulous piece featuring eglomise!  So, it’s no wonder this stylish number (again from John Richard) made my list of faves!

Favorite Chair #4

The color of the year for 2010 is turquoise, but how about a richer deep teal for a pop of color?  Use these comfy chairs to add style to a family room, study or swanky sitting area.

The embroidered branch pattern on this Sherrill chair is to die for!  We contrasted the outside of the frame with a sumptuous chocolate brown velvet & then added some additional eye candy by using polished nickel nail head trim to finish off the look.

**All of the above chairs are available at IBB Design Furniture Showroom**

Mini Make-over

It’s time for a make-over!  It’s a mini project for me.  I’ve finally had it!   My office at IBB is in major need of some TLC.  You see, we’ve been at our current location for more than five years now.  I was pregnant with my daughter & super busy at the time of the move, so I decided to put the task of “officially” designing my office space off for a later date.  Well, five years later, things are still super busy around here (Praise God!)  & my walls are still bare (with the exception of a print of the new studios I was given when I started at Good Morning Texas).  My desk chair is oh-so-comfy, but a MAJOR eye sore!  My guest chairs for clients & other business guests are pretty, but they’re just not me.

Last weekend while I was up here working on a client project, I finally reached my boiling point.  Part of creating inspiring interiors, I believe, is surrounding ourselves with things we find inspiring.  My office, where I spend a great deal of time each day, falls very short of awe inspiring.

I whipped out some fabric books & my Benjamin Moore paint deck & picked out some fabulosity for my new digs.  I wanted something fun, girly, young & hip.  I will be using hints of fuschia (because I love pink & I think my fiance would kill me if I ever tried to use pink in the home we’ll soon be sharing!)  I’ll be re-covering my desk chair & the guest chairs, painting the walls, adding some art & lighting & switching out the big bulky armoire for a sleek mirrored console.  I’ll be keeping my desk unit (even though I probably should eventually update that too) because I love it’s functionality & quite frankly I just don’t want to spend the money right now.  I’ll be tackling this in stages (in my spare time:  note to self; find spare time! ~ LOL!) so I will post the after pictures when it’s complete.  For now,  check out the color palette as well as some before photos below.

These are the fabrics I’ve selected.  Since you haven’t heard me shut up about my excitement that turquoise is the 2010 color of the year, are you even surprised that I’d be using it in my own surroundings?  I’m contrasting it with the rich midnight blue velvet.  I’ll be pulling in hints of my favorite color pink through the fuchsia in the stripe fabric as well as some accessories.  I”ll show you & explain where everything is going in the After post when the room is complete.  Gotta let the reveal be a surprise…

I know, I know.  Hideous, right?  I use that cozy turquoise throw everyday ( It’s always so dang cold in my office! ), but it actually helps disguise my ugly desk chair too ~ LOL!
armoirebefore

My chunky clunky armoire is getting the boot.  It’s really just serving as a storage unit for JUNK!  Hasta la vista baby!

wallcolorbefore

This shows off the wall color before.  I’ll be changing it to a bright white for a cheery update and to bring some life into my office.  I have no windows in here, so I’m ready for a light bright feel.  As of now, I’ve selected Benjamin Moore white dove.  I’ll be painting a test sample this weekend.

guestchairbefore

I’ll be recovering these chairs & adding some cool detailing to give them a fun playful update.

If I’m feeling a little frisky, I will probably chronicle this makeover via twitter, so make sure you follow me here.

Terrifically Turquoise

I’ve been geting lots of e-mails about how to use the 2010 color of the year, turquoise, in your home.  So, I thought I would post ideas as I run across them.  I’ll be doing a segment on the fabulous color on GMT this Friday, so make sure & tune in for that as well.

Fabrics:

From light to bright, these shades of the rich color would add a pop of fabulosity to a neutral decor.  Use them for pillows, re-cover a chair, upholster a wall or use them for draperies.

2010 Color of the year

I am giddy with excitement today!  Pantone, the global authority on color, announced that 2010’s color of the year is… drum roll please… TURQUOISE!  Can we say YIPPEE!!!???  As I told you previously, my new fav color combo is turquoise & tangerine.  I love, love, love the color turquoise.  I can remember traveling to Santa Fe with my parents as a child & my must have souvenir was always a piece of turquoise jewelry.  The color just makes me happy!  Pantone describes the color as inviting & luminous.  I must say that I undoubtedly agree.

Turquoise had a dominant prescence at the Fall 2009 International Home Furnishings Market.  So, this announcement is really no surprise to me.  In fact, I think I really would have been more shocked if they hadn’t chosen turquoise as the color of the year for 2010.  Here’s a look at a compilation of some of my favorite uses of turquoise in both home interiors and fashion.

Trend Alert: Turquoise & Tangerine

So, remember when I was telling y’all that my favorite new color combination is turquoise & tangerine?  Well, I’m just ecstatic to report that it was shown all over the fall furniture market in High Point, North Carolina.  From fabrics & upholstery to pillows & accessories, the eye catching color combo well, caught my eye.  Check out just a few of the ways it’s being used…

Fabulous chair from Hickory Chair.  Soft supple aqua chair fabric with a pop of orange in a throw pillow.  Such a luxurious statement!  This also happens to be one of my very favorite chair frames.

This hand blown glass was one of my absolute favorite finds at market this fall!  It’s so affordable too!  Look for it at IBB soon!

Color Trends

Dear Designer Detective,
What are the latest color combinations for home decorating? What combinations do you view as timeless?

~Holly

Dear Holly,
What a great question!  I love talking about color.  My favorite new hot color combination right now is turquoise & tangerine.  It’s even fun to say them together, right?  Various shades or orange and aqua are showing up all over the design world.  I just love the two colors together, but they’re being used solo a lot as well.  Here’s a few examples:

As far as classics go, you can never go wrong with a neutral color palette.  They can be changed & updated by simply adding sparks of color using pillows, art or small accessories.

If you’d like to get really technical concerning color palettes, Pantone is where to get all of the expert information.  They have spent a considerable amount of effort & energy into combining stunning colors to create a trend forecast for 2010 including a sampling of colors that create 4 different color palettes.  See below.

Lovely Lee Jofa

So, I happened upon this stunning new fabric by Lee Jofa the other day while pulling fabrics for a client…

Gorgeous Green

As I was walking through our showroom today, my eye was caught several times by this gorgeous apple green that’s so hot right now.  It’s all over the design world.  From fabrics to pillows & accessories.  I love the color green.  It pairs so well with a variety of colors.  One of my very favorite combinations is apple green & chocolate brown.  Doesn’t it just sound scrumptious?  I snapped a few shots with my iphone of some of my favorite accessories featuring green.

I’m a sucker for animal print & the apple green just gives you that special pop of color to make your room say “Oh la la”!

I am SO over Ivy in home decor!  It can really date a house so quickly!  Now I’m using cool new grass & twig designs like this.  So chic!

This pillow rocks!  I love the criss-cross ribbon design.

Great example of the apple green/chocolate brown color combo.  LOVE this floral/twig design.  Perfect for a bookcase, coffee table or end table.

Paint app for your iphone

O happy day!!!  O happy day!!!  Check this out!  OMG, I am having a blast playing around with my latest iphone app.  Paint selection just got a little easier thanks to Benjamin Moore.  That right.  You guessed it.  They have actually created an app that helps you select paints from their line to use in your home or next design project.  It’s super easy to use & best of all, wait for it…..  IT’S FREE!!!

There has been a bit of controversy surrounding the accuracy of the helpful paint selection tool.  The arguement is that the colors you see on your iphone screen or computer are not compatible to real life.  Thus, making it nearly impossible to select color correct hues for your project.

I’ve played around with it for a week or so now & I’d have to say that overall I’m really excited about it.  It sure beats flipping thru a paint deck.  I captured photos of a few fabrics with my iphone & then used them in the Benjamin Moore app to help select a few paint options.  I’m already pretty familiar with their line of paints, so choosing from their suggestions was not difficult for me.  Even with the app, I still feel strongly that you should ALWAYS sample at least 3 options.  Paint looks remarkably different in your room than it does on a paint chip, or in today’s technology advanced world ~ an iphone app.  My vote ~ thumbs up!!!

The Benjamin Moore iphone app ben® Color Capture™ is available in the itunes store.

Yellow Fever

Yellow is so energizing & happy that I’m just bursting while writing this post.  Doesn’t yellow make you happy just thinking about it?  Think sunflowers, mimosas, baby chickies, a warm sunny day…

Yellow can do so much for the soul and with hundreds of variations of the shade, it can be worked into just about any home.  My bedroom growing up as a kid was yellow, blue & white.  I LOVED it!  My room was always so bright & happy.  Because of it’s balancing and harmonious properties, yellow can be combined with so many colors to make a lovely color palette.  (blue & yellow, orange & yellow, green & yellow, black & yellow, chocolate brown & yellow, the possibilities are endless)

You may remember, back in December, that Pantone announced Mimosa (a warm sexy shade of yellow) as the color of the year for 2009.

Open your eyes & you’ll notice that yellow is just about everywhere these days.  Kate Hudson is wearing a fun, flirty yellow dress on the February cover of Elle.  Michelle Obama wowed crowds in a stunning Isabel Toledo “lemongrass” yellow suit for the Inauguration yesterday.

As home fashions often mirror runway fashions, yellow is popping up in furnishings and fabrics all over the world.  On a recent fabric hunting spree, I came across a wide range of gorgeous yellow fabrics.  From traditional styles to contemporary, the cheery color is making a big impact.

A sampling of yellow from my recent fabric hunting spree

So, cheers to Pantone for choosing such a celebratory color like Mimosa for the color of the year.  Now, pop the bubbly & go make your home happy!

Girls just wanna have fun ~ with color

I am in love, love, love with this look.  I am SO into color & this definitely emanates color!  As a matter of fact, this room consists of all of my favorite colors.  All of the color experts are proclaiming that 2009 is the year of bright colors.  This look nails it.

When I grow up, I want my master bedroom to look like this!  Seriously.  The whole look is very artsy & says “look at me”, but in a tasteful way.  The hot pink chairs combined with the cool water blue chest and celery green walls are to die for.  I’m guessing that the inspiration for this room was the art.  It reminds me of a fabulous sculpted oil painting that my parents own that consists of every color in the spectrum.  I’ve loved that piece since I was a child.  I’ve always teased my mom that if it turned up missing, she’d know where to find it.  A piece of art like this is always a great place to start.  The possibilities are endless.  You really could go in just about any direction.

In my opinion, the look is flawlessly pulled together.  It’s busy with color, but free of clutter.  The art ties it all together in a perfect little bow.  It makes me want to jump start my master bedroom makeover!

Waves of Blue

Expert color forecasters are saying that blue is here to stay.  Take note.  The mineral and ice blues that were oh-so-popular last year are getting cozy with some warmer deeper blue hues.  So, you can’t go wrong with blue!  The experts are saying that a wide range of blues will dominate color palettes this year.  Keep your eyes open to rich hues with purple undertones.  Color theorists say that the color blue can have soothing healing qualities and invite calmness into our lives.  Now, who couldn’t use some of that?

Deep blues can be paired beautifully with a variety of colors to create drama & contrast.  Just check out this swanky fabric on the chair pictured to the left.  The fun pattern is brought to life by the contrast of blue & butter yellow.  See these chairs in person at IBB Design Furniture Showroom.

The possibilities for cool combos are endless; navy & tangerine, mineral blue & cream, royal blue & kelly green, blueberry & vanilla, sky blue & terra cotta, the good ole red, white & blue … the list goes on & on.

There aren’t many shades of blue that I don’t like.  My favorite football team, The Dallas Cowboys, sport a regal navy & icy silver combo.  Whereas, my home is filled with soft mineral & ice blue.  So, when considering new colors for your home, give blue a chance.  It’s a classic.

Add some pop!

Today’s Design Dilemma:  Using color to make your room say WOW!

Take a monochromatic or neutral color palette from drab to fab!  Add a few simple pops of color to create some drama like we have in this cozy family room.  The builder white walls are brought to life by a sophisticated colorful print on the draperies hanging on simple wood rods & rings.  The fireplace is a great focal point, but you really take notice with the addition of the bright artwork.  Notice the ultra-functional red ottomans in front of the coffee table.  Small movable ottomans are one of my favorite “must-have” pieces!  We’ve added a few colorful throw pillows & some accessories to complete the look.  So easy to do!  Try some of these tricks in your family room for a quick makeover.
