Spring 2017:  One Room Challenge Week 2

OMG! What did I get myself in to?  As I sit here writing this post (after 1:00 AM), I’m starting to think I should have chosen our pool bath instead of our study 😬. With all I have on my plate with clients & running a business, it proves very difficult to find time to tackle my own design to-do list. This past week has been a whirlwind. We head to High Point market next week, so I’ve been meeting with clients back to back, checking in on projects, presenting concepts & sourcing.  We’re very fortunate that the area of Dallas we live in is booming. Like crazy big time booming!  There’s no shortage of folks building new homes or looking to remodel. With so many companies relocating here, the real estate market is on fire and so many commercial projects are popping up all around us. It’s definitely an exciting time at IBB Design. With tight deadlines and such a high demand for skilled trades & labor, I’ve spent a great deal of time calling in favors to get projects completed for my clients. This first week of the ORC has definitely been a reality check for me that this room may not be camera ready in six weeks.

Let’s get to the nitty gritty & discuss inspiration, details & timeline.

As you saw last week, the room’s backdrop is high gloss black paneling, white ceiling & brass & acrylic light fixtures.

Now if you know me or follow me on social media, then you know I love color!  Let’s take a look at some inspiration photos for the room’s color palette. I saved these photos a while back & can’t remember the original source, so if you know the designer, let me know so I can credit.

L💙VE all of this fresh color!  Blue, yellow & a small pop of fuchsia – AMEN to all of that!

This inspiration photo really captures the color vibe I’m after.

The art above will go above our fireplace mantle is my inspiration for my room’s palette. It’s a actually an Hermes scarf that my mom gave me as a gift. I’m framing it to turn it into artwork that I can see & enjoy every day. I’m not typically a green person but I’m so drawn to pulling out this stunning malachite that I’m going to step out of my normal comfort zone & go for it as a strong accent in the room 😍.

I’ll be doing motorized drapery in here. The panels will hang on a simple brass traversing rod & the top photo shows the square finial I’m using. I have a little trick up my sleeve with the drapery fabric (more on that later) but this is going to be a super tight turnaround considering all of the elements of the design. The black & brass bar cart (available at IBB Design) will sit to the left of the fireplace with the large scaled gold metal shade lamp on it.

I’m using a glass, chrome & brasssawhorse desk that will float in the center of the room & back to the built in bookshelves. I love this little malachite drink table. I might use it next to the quilted yellow leather chair that I’m using toward the right of the fireplace.

Ok folks! That’s all for today!  Make sure you follow me on Instagram for more sneak peeks and behind the scenes. Easter weekend is almost here!  Enjoy your time with your families.

New Video: Stylish Family Friendly Design

Tips for a Stylish Family Friendly Design:

1)    Keep your larger pieces neutral to allow you flexibility to switch out your accent colors more easily in the future.

2)    Use an upholstered ottoman as a cocktail table.  This is great for family’s with little ones.  There are no sharp edges for them to get hurt on.  Leather is super durable & you won’t worry when your kids or hubby kick their feet up on it.

3)    Make it unique.  The lamp shades on these lamps can be painted any Benjamin Moore paint color.  It’s a great way to make a statement & bring color into your space.  Feel like changing your accent color in the future?  Just paint the shades to go with your new palette.

4) Play with pattern on your chairs, pillows & accessories.  Polka dots are the latest pattern trend.  We love this sophisticated version on the chairs we’ve used in this vignette.

Kravet Blogfest2012 Highlights part 1

Wow! What an amazing week! I had such a blast at Kravet’s Blogfest2012! I’m already ready for next year! I’m not sure how they’ll ever top all of the fun we had. In case you missed it, I recapped all of the excitement yesterday on Good Morning Texas.

I was very excited to have 2 fellow IBB designers along for the ride – Brandy Scott & James “JT” Turner.

We kicked off the festivities by perusing ICFF and came across this insanely cool ping pong table by Akke Functional Art.

This Hermes inspired sink from Linkasink really caught my eye. I think it would be such an elegant addition to a powder bath!

Next stop was the Kips Bay Show house benefiting the Boys & Girl’s club. It was a scrumptious feast for the eyes with incredible rooms by notable designers like Alexa Hampton & Thom Filicia. One of my favorite rooms featured this stunning tapestry over the sofa.

Alexa Hampton’s bedroom featured richly lacquered walls in “Dragon’s Breath”. The bed was dressed with fabrics from her personal collection with Kravet. I was very excited to see the suzani inspired fabric since we’re getting ready to use it in a client’s dining room.

This chair was so remarkable in person. The contrasting welt cord was the exact shade of the deep bluish purple walls. The apple green silk paired with the creamy white finish and gold leafing was so fresh and made a beautiful statement in the dining room.

This layered vignette was so well pulled together. I think almost every blogger stopped to photograph it.

The weather may have been yucky on Tuesday morning, but we were cheerfully welcomed by these gorgeous pink peonies at Hearst Tower. We were treated to a behind the scenes look at what goes into publishing House Beautiful, Veranda & Elle Decor.

It was such a pleasure to chat with House Beautiful’s editor, Newell Turner. He was so warm & gracious. Newell and the staff at House Beautiful have embraced the digital world and are steering the magazine to become an interactive experience that the reader can enjoy far past the printed pages. They also fully support the blogging world and have realized the benefits of taking cues from design bloggers.

The next stop on our tour was the Elle Decor Modern Life Concept House. My favorite space was designed by Michael Tovano. The outdoor space was tres chic! We all gushed over the patterned metal cabana.

We spent some time at the D&D building for much more eye candy & inspiration. This wall of ikat fabrics at Brunschwig & Fils caught my eye. They offer a wonderful selection of richly saturated & fresh colors in ikat prints and many more timeless classics they are so well known for.

We ended the day with a cocktail party at GE Monogram. I honestly had no idea about the detailed customization they offered. One of my favorite things showcased there was these braided leather refrigerator handles. Such a fabulous detail!

On Wednesday, we enjoyed an exclusive tour of the Kravet studios. I’ve done this tour a few times before, but it’s always a treat because you get a sneak peek at all of the fabulous fabrics they’re designing. Look what I spotted at Lee Jofa! It’s coming out soon!

During our trip, we were introduced to a very neat company called GlassyBaby.  Created by 3 time cancer survivor, Lee Rhodes, they make artisan hand blown glass votives in an array of gorgeous colors.  “To Lee, they represented “that deep breath that we often forget to take.”  I was very excited to take home one of the turquoise votives.  My apologies to founder Lee Rhodes & glassybaby.  I mistakenly referred to them as “GlassBaby” instead of glassybaby on Good Morning Texas.  Please make sure to check out this wonderful company.  Not only do they make beautiful votives, they have also given back over $850,000 to charities to date.

There’s so much more to share with you! Stay tuned for more photos & details on each of the amazing experiences we had during Blogfest2012.

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!

For the Dog Lovers

Summer is almost here & the kiddos will soon be out of school.  A bedroom or playroom makeover is the perfect summer project!  Involve your little one in the planning & let their imagination run wild.  We used bright colors & dogs as our inspiration for this adorable little girl’s room. For a feature behind the bed, we blew up the circle print on the bedskirt & painted it on the wall.  I love how it turned out to look like the Twister game board & the playfulness it adds to the room.  I recently featured a tour of the room on Good Morning Texas. If you’d like to see it in person, head out to Whitley Place & check out the Huntington Homes model home & get inspired!

Halloween Tabletop

Today on Good Morning Texas I brought in a fabulous hammered metal dining table all set & ready to go for a sweet Halloween Soiree!  Watch the segment here.  I created the napkin ties, place cards, treat tags, & Happy Halloween labels with the help from my fabulous friend & amazing graphic designer Wendy.  The tags & labels can all be printed out from your home computer.  I printed them all on card stock, but they can also be printed on sticky labels.  Check out all of the details below to create this fun “Candy Corn” themed tabletop for your party this weekend!

The place mats were made from Halloween scrapbook paper glued onto black card stock.  Use a festive ribbon, like my trick or treat candy corn ribbon to tie on the “Bone Appetit” napkin ties.

napkin.ties

Make your own coordinating vases. 1) use a large vegetable or small coffee can 2) wrap scrapbook paper around the can & finish off with some festive ribbon 3) place a piece of floral foam in the bottom 4) arrange your favorite yellow & orange flowers in each can

Orange soda bottles bring lots of great color to the table.  To make them more festive 1) wash off the original labels with soap & hot water 2) download & print my “Happy Halloween” labels 3) wrap the bottle with a strip of coordinating ribbon or scrapbook paper 4) glue the “Happy Halloween” label on top

Caramel apples are a great favor to give your guests at a Halloween party.  It’s a sweet treat to end the night & you can easily make them yourself or buy them already made.  My absolute favorite place to get caramel apples is from Mrs. Prindables. They are to die for yummy  & so beautiful.  The presentation is amazing.  They also work great for hostess gifts!

What’s Your Cocktail Style?

Cocktail tables, that is.  My design philosophy is that your home needs to be a personal reflection of who you are.  So, for today’s segment on Good Morning Texas, I came up with a fun way to help you determine the perfect cocktail table for you by what your cocktail of choice is.  Watch the segment here.

Rustic & ready for game day!  This leather upholstered cocktail ottoman comes with a built in game board & chess & checkers game pieces.  Sports enthusiasts can kick up their feet on the durable leather and sit back & relax.  Game table center can be used to set food or drinks or for countless hours of fun during family game night.

Glamorous and sophisticated, this mirrored top cocktail table says “Look at me”.  For the stylish woman or man (or family!) who likes an updated traditional look with clean lines and metal finishes.

This glass top cocktail table is made from an antique flour bin & has a wrought iron base & handles on the sides.  The look is vintage and has an aged feel just like a fine wine!

Gorgeous Gray & Vibrant Amethsyt

Today on Good Morning Texas I featured a beautiful living room with a silvery gray & luscious purple color palette.  Click HERE to watch the segment.  The chairs are covered in a rich patterned velvet and add a definitive style to this space.  The sofa is very tailored and has a tufted seat cushion.  I love that we switched it up a bit by tufting the seat cushion instead of the back of the sofa.  We accessorized the room with a purple blown glass vase, geodes &a pair of fabulous silver rain glass lamps from Interlude.  The rug we chose adds a soft blue green to the color palette.  The playful print on it ties in with the amethyst on the chairs.

Gray is such a yummy neutral.  I really have such an affinity for it.  With it’s popularity these days, we’re seeing the color used in a variety of design styles.  Long gone are the days when the color gray made you think of a cold sterile or industrial space.  I was recently at a taping for the Nate Berkus Show & after the taping he graciously answered questions from the audience filled with design bloggers.  One of the girls asked him his favorite shades of gray paint.  I took a video clip with my iphone while he answered.  Check out what he had to say!

Nate Berkus’s Favorite Gray Paints

Well, I must say that Nate has divine taste because my favorite gray paint just happens to be Benjamin Moore’s Dior Gray as well!  I have used it in several projects.  It seems to be the most perfect shade of gray.  It’s rich & warm and just oozing with style.  I suppose we should expect nothing less when inspired by the uber-chic Christian Dior!  I recently used it in the corporate offices of one of my Dallas clients.

The fabric pictured was one of our accent fabrics.  The sofa in the lobby was a warm souffle color.  I used Benjmain Moore’s Dior Gray (pictured top), Benjamin Moore’s Pewter (pictured center), and Benjamin Moore’s Acadia White (pictured bottom) throughout the corporate offices.  It really turned out brilliantly!

ABC’s of Design: A is for Accessories

Accessories are like jewelry for your home.  Without them, your home will feel naked & as if something is missing.  Check out a few of my favorite budget friendly accessories that I showcased on GMT last Friday.

When setting your budget for your room design, make sure to leave ample room for the accessories.  Accessories include rugs, lamps, art & decorative items that help tie your whole look together.  A good rule of thumb is to allow 1/3 of your overall budget for accessories.  You may end up spending more if you find a few items that you just can’t live without.  Or, you may end up spending less if you take your time to find really good deals.  Whatever the case, it’s a good idea to set money aside to complete your room’s look.

A few quick pointers to help you get you started:
*Pairings &  groupings of items can help create balance & symmetry in your room.

*Remember size & scale: choose items that are in proportion with your furnishings.  Small items will quickly get lost on a larger piece & larger items will overwhelm a smaller piece.

*Vary the height of items by using books to stack accessories.  Height variations add visual interest & allow your eye to peruse the space with a steady flow.

*Make it personal:  Pick up treasures on your travels that can be used as accessories in your home.  Displaying items that are meaningful help tell a story about you & your family in your space.

Can you over do it?  Absolutely!  You don’t need to cover every inch of wall or table top space with art & other accessories.  Less really is more.

Carefully select items that help relate to the color story & style of your room.  A pair of lamps, a fabulous piece of art & some unique blown glass  may be all you need to dress up a console for your entry or family room.

*Top photo is from IBB Design Fine Furnishings & bottom photo is from the home of an IBB client.

Good Old Red, White & Blue

In honor of the 4th of July, let’s talk about some  All-American colors!  Friday on Good Morning Texas, I showed you different ways you could incorporate the classic red, white & blue color palette into your home.  Whether you choose a neutral base & add doses of red, white & blue thru your accessories or you use the fresh colors in larger amounts on your bigger pieces, these colors will help you create a design that will make you feel happy.

Here are a few more of my favorite red, white & blue decor ideas for your home:

It’s Nate Day!

Did you know that today is Nate Day?  And, yes I am referring to the uber-fabulous  Nate Berkus, celebrity interior decorator extraordinare.  If you’re active on Twitter, then you may have been alerted to the trending topic #nateday that has all of the design & blogging community in a frenzy.  “How’d he get his own day?”, you may be asking yourself.  No, Oprah didn’t declare it Nate Day.  The Moggit Girls did.  Why?  Is it his infectious smile & energy?  His drool worthy colorful designs?  Well, of course, but it all started with a recent announcement.  The Moggit Girls created such a buzz when they first tweeted about the debut of Nate’s new show premiering in September that they asked fellow design bloggers & tweeters to unite for a day full of Nate Berkus inspired content.  Being a fan of Nate’s, I am, of course, happy to participate.

So, in honor of #nateday, I thought I would share with you the top 5 reasons I can identify with & why I swoon over Nate’s designs.

#1 Contrast:  I absolutely adore the upholstery against the dark painted walls (covered in eco friendly paint company Farrow & Ball’s Off Black) in this room Nate designed alongside Ann Coyle for Elle Rakieten, a producer for the Oprah Winfrey show.

#2 Layering:  I’m a huge fan of layering!  I love to add a powerful punch to a plain sisal rug with a zebra skin rug as shown in the photo above.  Berkus hit the high notes with this one.  Each piece in the room is fabulous in it’s own right, but when joined together they create a beautiful design harmony.  I showed you a similar look  with a pair of green chairs & a fun zebra hair on hide rug on GMT back in March.

#3 Adding Ottomans:  The addition of ottomans or small benches not only allows for extra seating for your guests in a room but also gives you the opportunity to have some design fun!  I love the legs on the ottomans Nate used in this design.  The pop of color on the seat is a deep contrast with the dark rich sofa across from it.

#4 Sexy Sectionals:  Whether it’s floating in a room (like the one I recently showed you that I designed for a client in California) or hugging a wall, a sectional does not have to be boring or plain.  Even though this sectional is neutral in color, the squared tufted sections make it say “va va va voom”!  This swanky pad in Milan is one of my all time favorite Berkus designs.

#5 Any shade of blue:  I’m always feeling blue!  I’m drawn to pretty much every shade of blue from teal or turquoise to mineral or baby blue.  It’s one of my favorite colors to work with.  Nate livened up his sister’s nearly neutral color palette with the addition of a painted blue chest.  The shade is pure perfection & adds drama & intensity to her home.

HAPPY NATE DAY EVERYONE!

Sizzling Summer Colors

The kiddos will soon be out of school & begging to play in the pool all day everyday to beat the heat.  If you’re looking for inspiration for your home’s color palette, why not consider a few sizzling summer colors?  Last week on GMT, we chatted about one of my all time favorite color combinations ~ Turquoise & Tangerine.  It sounds so chic just rolling off your tongue, but when you combine the two hues with crisp whites or other neutrals it instantly satisfies your need for exceptional eye candy.  Whenever I’m around the powerful color duo, I dream of sitting on a beach in the Caribbean drinking a Hibiscus Martini.

Watch the segment here to get a few ideas on incorporating these summer inspired colors into your home.

Glamorous Gray!

You read it right!  Gray does not have to mean boring, drab or dreary!  Gray is actually quite the glamorous neutral.  It serves as a wonderful back drop for colors that pop like a sunny yellow or feminine lavender.  I also loves shades of blue like aqua with gray.  Picture it with Hermes orange.  I’m using that color combination for a client in Dallas right now.

I featured a swanky sitting area of gray & yellow on GMT last Friday & created quite a buzz about the hot neutral.  Watch the video here.

Make no mistake, gray is certainly hot on the scene right now, but it’s a timeless neutral that has been used in interior design for generations.  It’s always been a favorite especially amongst those who love the look of Hollywood Glamor.

Benjamin Moore makes two of my favorite shades of gray to use.  Wickham Gray will lightly wash your walls with a subtle yet fresh gray.  Dior Gray,  on the other hand, will give you instant drama with a rich blue undertone.  It’s simply stunning.  I actually walked into my friend Shelly’s house recently only to discover that her master bedroom is painted in this stylish gray.  I’ve also specified it for an upcoming project for a client’s office.

So, my fellow design devotees, I encourage you to embrace this neutral color & get glamorous!

Upholstery 411

Last Friday on GMT, I gave viewers some helpful pointers on things to look for when shopping for upholstery.  I have to give a big shout out to my Twitter friend Carl for suggesting a very helpful pointer to give everyone.  Thanks Carl!  Watch the video here.

Let’s use the photo above & discuss few things to keep in mind concerning cushions when you’re selecting upholstery for your home.

  1. Upholstery Styles:
Here we have a tight back sofa by Hickory Chair.  A tight back has a very structured & tidy look.  There are no back cushions to fluff.  We added a few throw pillows for comfort & to soften the look.  Decorative pillows are always a great way to add a punch of style.
  2. Cushion Type:
    Multi-cushion box seat:
Multi cushions are great for durability.  You can flip & fluff them as needed.  This comes in handy when you need to flip a cushion to hide a stain that won’t come out.  A box cushion is shaped like a box & generally finished off with a welt cord.
  3. Chairs:
Here we have a dark wood frame with upholstered loose “T” cushions also by Hickory Chair.  A “T” cushion simply wraps the arm of a chair or sofa to form a “T”.

Picking the Perfect Coffee Table

Today on Good Morning Texas, I gave a few quick tips for choosing the perfect coffee table for your room.  It’s important that you select a coffee table for your home that not only has form & function, but also makes a statement in the room.  Watch the segment here.

GMT3_26_10

Rectangular leather tray coffee table (pictured left) by John Richard.  4 upholstered bunching ottomans by Design Guild.  Both available at IBB Design Furniture Showroom.

Tips for selecting the perfect coffee table
1.  The standard height for a coffee table  is 17”-19”  (Contemporary designs often use lower tables.)

coffeetableJRmirrored

One of my all time favorite coffee tables!  This eglomise stunner is by John Richard.  I especially love the shape & legs on this table.

2.  Positioning your coffee table:
Place at least 18” away from your chairs or sofa ~ you want it to be within reach but you need to have enough clearance to easily walk by without feeling like the space is cramped.

coffeetableCenturyleather
I love this leather ottoman coffee table by Century.  The nail head detail is to die for!  The tufting & rich chocolate leather invite your guests to kick up their feet & relax.  Do you remember seeing this on GMT recently?

Determine what size & shape is best for your room.  Ask yourself these questions:

1.  Will the coffee table align with a pair of chairs, a sofa or a sectional?
2.  What shape works best for my room/furniture layout?  Do I need a round, square, rectangular, or irregular shaped coffee table?  Rounds & squares work well with sectionals.  Use an oval shaped coffee table when a rectangular would work, but the space is a bit cramped.  The rounded edges help you gain a few extra inches & open up the space.
3.  What surface do I prefer?  Wood top, glass top, stone top, or upholstered?  Glass & other transparent tops can make a smaller room feel bigger.  An upholstered coffee table can help create a more laid back feel that will invite your guests to kick their feet up.
coffetableCenturyrect
This glass top rectangular beauty is by Century.  Using a glass or transparent top can help open up a room.  Rectangles align well with sofas.  A good rule of thumb is to have your coffee table be 1/2 to 2/3 the size of your sofa.  This helps create visual proportion & allows access to the coffee table from each seat on the sofa.

What’s a Welt Cord?

Dear Designer Detective,

I often hear you refer to a welt cord when pointing out things on the furniture you showcase on Good Morning Texas.  What exactly is a welt cord?

~Tina D.
McKinney, TX

Dear Tina,

Great question!  A welt cord is simply a fabric covered cord that follows the seam of a chair cushion, sofa cushion, or pillows.  A welt cord helps give upholstery a more finished tailored look.  The two types of welt cords are a self-welt & a contrasting welt.  A self welt is when the cord is done out of the same fabric.  A welt cord that is done out of a different fabric is called a contrasting welt cord.  Contrasting welt cords add lots of style & pop to your upholstery.  I just love to use them!
WeltCordSherrillchair

On this Sherrill chair, we used a contrasting welt cord out of a rich chocolate brown velvet.

WeltCordCenturySofa

On this Century sofa, we’ve used a contrasting welt cord out of the same leather used on the frame of the sofa.

Today on Good Morning Texas, I featured a sofa by Century that has everyone around IBB white hot!  With style that seems to channel Chanel, this beauty will have you swooning when you see it in person.  The hand painted white chairs & leather cocktail ottoman are also by Century.

From Toddler to Teen: Girl’s Room

GirlsSpringRoom

Friday on Good Morning Texas I showcased a fun spring inspired little girl’s room & adjoining play area.  The bright fun color palette was inspired by spring and has the type of design longevity to carry your little sweetie from toddler to early teen years.  Watch the segment here.

We used a fun array of fabrics in lime, purple, hot pink & yellow.  The walls are painted a sunny yellow & we picked up the pattern from the duvet cover & created a border half way up the wall for the room.  Wooden orange flowers adorn the wall above the headboard.  We used classic white painted furniture that allows the bright bold fabrics & patterns to be the showstoppers for the room.
girlsTicTacToe

In the adjoining playroom, we jazzed up white walls by hand painting “tic tac toe” in bold colors up the wall.  We dressed the windows with fun hot orange leopard print drapery panels.

If you’d like to see the room in person, you can venture out to the Horizon Homes model home in Little Elm, Texas.

4 Tips to Start A Bedroom Makeover

Last week I featured my 4 tips to start your bedroom makeover on GMT.  You can watch it here. I figured you may like to have a little additional eye candy to help inspire you.

Tip #1
Start with a fabulous bed!

This stunning upholstered bed is one I designed & made for a client.  It’s graceful curves, tufting and nail head trim detail make it a real statement piece for their bedroom.

Monochromatic beauty from the pages of Elle Decor.  Every fabulous bed deserves a fabulous bench.

Check out this hottie ~  a luscious red velvet headboard.  I always love a red, black & white color scheme.  This one is executed so well because they let the showstopping red headboard stand on it’s own with only a few smaller doses of red in the bedroom.  This allows the black & white to balance the rest of the room.

I’m a sucker for a great iron canopy bed.  I had one very similar to this one in college.  I also had sheer drapery panels hanging from each of the posts.  It makes your room feel like a quaint little getaway.  This bedroom could easily fit right into my home.

Tip #2
Don’t skimp ~ get yourself some magnificent bedding!

Gorgeous bedding by Alessandra

I love the idea of using drapery to frame a bed.  It’s just so romantic.

Another stunning bedroom featured in Elle Decor.  They layering of the different hues of blue has a tremendous effect.  The cool crisp linens are so calming and peaceful.

Tip #3
Lighting is key!

Add color to your bedroom through the use of lovely lamps like this orange beauty.

I love putting chandeliers in bedrooms.  This piece is perfect for all of you lovers of contemporary design out there.

The gorgeous chandelier in this bedroom is the perfect compliment to the rest of the regal setting.  So classic and luxurious!

Tip #4
Select great nightstands! Remember ~ they don’t always have to match.

I heart these vintage suitcases stacked on top of each other to create a bedside table.  Muy fabuloso!

How cool is this?  They used a small ottoman with a silver tray on top to create a nightstand.  I also love the combination of pink, black & white.  This looks like a room I would create for my daughter for her teenage years.  I think I would do a fabric Roman shade instead of the woven wood window treatment.

Video: My top 5 favorite chairs right now!

If you’re looking for that special something to liven up your decor, a fabulous chair or pair of chairs can easily do the trick!  I recently highlighted my top 5 favorite chairs of the moment for Good Morning Texas.

Watch the video here.

Favorite Chair #1

This leather & hair on hide upholstered chair with antique brass nailhead trim would work wonderfully in a study featuring a rich warm brown color palette.

Favorite Chair #2

I LOVE this jewel tone beauty from John Richard!  The rich colors paired with gold leaf detail make this chair such a luxurious treat!  This has been a very popular chair at IBB.

Favorite Chair #3

Now, you all know that I am a sucker when it comes to a fabulous piece featuring eglomise!  So, it’s no wonder this stylish number (again from John Richard) made my list of faves!

Favorite Chair #4

The color of the year for 2010 is turquoise, but how about a richer deep teal for a pop of color?  Use these comfy chairs to add style to a family room, study or swanky sitting area.

The embroidered branch pattern on this Sherrill chair is to die for!  We contrasted the outside of the frame with a sumptuous chocolate brown velvet & then added some additional eye candy by using polished nickel nail head trim to finish off the look.

**All of the above chairs are available at IBB Design Furniture Showroom**

Fan Friendly Family Room

Does your ultimate sports fan need a great place to watch the game?  Do you cringe at the thought of having friends over for the game because your family room looks more like a frat house than a warm inviting space?  Don’t worry!  You CAN have it all!  Just picture it ~  a well-designed room that will have your friends cheering!  It may look something like this…

What does it take to create the perfect place to watch the game in style?  In my opinion, there are three key factors.

1)  A fabulous place for your TV (i.e. a wall unit like shown above, mounted TV with a console underneath, or armoire ( I absolutely LOVE this TV wall unit!  There are plenty of compartments for all of your media equipment and tons of bookshelves to decorate with gorgeous accessories!)

2) Ample comfy seating (think a plush sofa & chairs) Tip ~ Add small stylish bench ottomans for extra seating (see zebra ottomans in above photo).  They can be easily moved around & are so versatile & functional!

3) Add style & color with accessories. (The furnishings in the above photo are very neutral.  We added pops of color with a red throw blanket, red pottery for the coffee table, red pillows for the sofa & other red accessories throughout the TV wall unit.

John-Richard was originally founded in 1980 as a wall art & decor business. They are hands down one of my very favorite home furnishings lines.  I have several of their pieces in my own home.  Today, they have expanded the business to include lighting, mirrors, accessories, botanicals, accent furniture, case goods, & upholstery.  They are known for their unique look to the furniture market crafted by cutting edge finishes, materials & other resources to manufacturer their goods. Their elegant sophistication is functional for today’s home, however their new designs are implemented with the idea of becoming tomorrow’s family treasures.

Find your style ~ Traditional

I recently featured a series on Good Morning Texas in helping viewers find their design style.  I decided to put this series together after seeing that 15% of the people polled on my blog had no clue what their design style was.  If you have no idea what your style is, how do you shop for your home?  You’ve got to know what your style is!  Otherwise, you will be making huge costly mistakes when making purchases in furniture & accessories for your home.

Click here to watch the GMT segment on Traditional Design.

If your design style is traditional, you will look for the following:

Characteristics of Traditional design:

  • the largest of the style categories with a dozen or so sub-categories
  • more conservative, sometimes more formal
  • elegant details
  • comfortable & classic
  • graceful carved curves
  • rich color palettes
  • dark polished woods such as cherry or mahogany
  • think wingback chairs, damask, paisley, or floral patterns
  • A familiar look because it’s the most popular design style amongst Americans & Europeans

A few examples of Traditional style furniture & accessories:

GMT October 31, 2008

Today on Good Morning Texas, we’re dining in style!  I’m setting up a gorgeous dining table & chairs by Century.  This is one of my favorite dining ensembles.  The table is to die for!  With the leaf in, you can easily seat 8 or 10.  I love the height & the curved back of the chairs.  They’re covered in this sumptuous cinnamon & pumpkin fabric.  For a centerpiece I’m using some gold hand blown glass hurricanes, some left over pumpkin colored fabric, and fresh flowers in a pumpkin vase.  All we need now are some guests & great conversation & we’re ready to Dine In Style!!!

Steps to Dining In Style:

    1. Find a fabulous dining table & chairs
    2. Find a console, china cabinet, buffet, or side table to use for serving & storage of fine china & linens.
    3. A chandelier can make or break the room.  This is your chance to set the tone for the room.  Do you want glamour with crystals or something more rustic?
    4. Once you have the fabulous table & other major furniture pieces, you need to finish off the room with accessories, a nice rug, and some draperies to tie in your color palette.
    5. Don’t forget art or a great mirror above your dining console.
    6. Don’t forget the centerpiece!  Hurricanes, silk florals, & pottery can make a great statement on your table!
    7. For holidays, use a festive fresh floral centerpiece & candles.

Perfect Paint Picking!!!

Today on GMT, we’re talking paint!  If you want to avoid one of the biggest mistakes people make when decorating their homes, then take note:  SAMPLE YOUR PAINT COLORS BEFORE YOU COMMITT!

Watch the segment here!

·1) 2 ways to sample paint: a) paint directly onto the wall or b) use plastic or foam sample boards made for sampling paint. These poster-like plastic sample boards can be picked up at most paint stores. I got these from Benjamin Moore for $2.99 a sheet. I cut them in half to be able to sample more colors, but if you want to make a larger sample just use it as is. The larger the sample is, the easier it is to visualize in the room, but I think they are still big enough even if you cut them in half.

·2) Tester set & mini-pots: These innovative “tester sets” can also be purchased at Benjamin Moore. They are completely re-usable. All you have to do is wash them out immediately after finishing your sample. Benjamin Moore has also created these mini-pots as a more cost effective way for people to test their paint colors before they buy. This keeps you from having to buy a quart of paint. They are available in most of their popular colors, but not their entire line. Benjamin Moore has nearly 4,000 different colors to choose from.

·3) Analyze one color at a time. Don’t hold up multiple sample boards to compare. Look at each sample individually & compare with how it looks with your fabrics, flooring & trim.

·4) Just because a paint color looked great in your neighbor’s house doesn’t mean that it will look good in your house. There are many factors that can change the look of paint from room to room. (i.e natural light, room dimension, trim & flooring colors & fabrics used in a room)

Paint treatments that are all the Rage!

Today on Good Morning Texas we discussed new techniques in paint finishes for your home.  All of the gorgeous samples I used were provided by my good friends at Artifax.  We’ve worked with them for over 15 years & let me tell you …. they are incredible!  Kris Perry is a true artist & her work is just awe-inspiring.  Her husband James is a master at Venetian and other plaster techniques.

These techniques are not for the novice painter.  They are incredibly labor intensive!  The team at Artifax have spent years perfecting these techniques.  They are the crew to be copied!  Copying is the sincerest form of flattery, but do NOT try this at home yourself!  You will be thoroughly disappointed, not to mention exhausted.  This is one area where you definitely want to call in the professionals!
