Upholstery 411

Last Friday on GMT, I gave viewers some helpful pointers on things to look for when shopping for upholstery.  I have to give a big shout out to my Twitter friend Carl for suggesting a very helpful pointer to give everyone.  Thanks Carl!  Watch the video here.

Let’s use the photo above & discuss few things to keep in mind concerning cushions when you’re selecting upholstery for your home.

  1. Upholstery Styles:
Here we have a tight back sofa by Hickory Chair.  A tight back has a very structured & tidy look.  There are no back cushions to fluff.  We added a few throw pillows for comfort & to soften the look.  Decorative pillows are always a great way to add a punch of style.
  2. Cushion Type:
    Multi-cushion box seat:
Multi cushions are great for durability.  You can flip & fluff them as needed.  This comes in handy when you need to flip a cushion to hide a stain that won’t come out.  A box cushion is shaped like a box & generally finished off with a welt cord.
  3. Chairs:
Here we have a dark wood frame with upholstered loose “T” cushions also by Hickory Chair.  A “T” cushion simply wraps the arm of a chair or sofa to form a “T”.

Picking the Perfect Coffee Table

Today on Good Morning Texas, I gave a few quick tips for choosing the perfect coffee table for your room.  It’s important that you select a coffee table for your home that not only has form & function, but also makes a statement in the room.  Watch the segment here.

GMT3_26_10

Rectangular leather tray coffee table (pictured left) by John Richard.  4 upholstered bunching ottomans by Design Guild.  Both available at IBB Design Furniture Showroom.

Tips for selecting the perfect coffee table
1.  The standard height for a coffee table  is 17”-19”  (Contemporary designs often use lower tables.)

coffeetableJRmirrored

One of my all time favorite coffee tables!  This eglomise stunner is by John Richard.  I especially love the shape & legs on this table.

2.  Positioning your coffee table:
Place at least 18” away from your chairs or sofa ~ you want it to be within reach but you need to have enough clearance to easily walk by without feeling like the space is cramped.

coffeetableCenturyleather
I love this leather ottoman coffee table by Century.  The nail head detail is to die for!  The tufting & rich chocolate leather invite your guests to kick up their feet & relax.  Do you remember seeing this on GMT recently?

Determine what size & shape is best for your room.  Ask yourself these questions:

1.  Will the coffee table align with a pair of chairs, a sofa or a sectional?
2.  What shape works best for my room/furniture layout?  Do I need a round, square, rectangular, or irregular shaped coffee table?  Rounds & squares work well with sectionals.  Use an oval shaped coffee table when a rectangular would work, but the space is a bit cramped.  The rounded edges help you gain a few extra inches & open up the space.
3.  What surface do I prefer?  Wood top, glass top, stone top, or upholstered?  Glass & other transparent tops can make a smaller room feel bigger.  An upholstered coffee table can help create a more laid back feel that will invite your guests to kick their feet up.
coffetableCenturyrect
This glass top rectangular beauty is by Century.  Using a glass or transparent top can help open up a room.  Rectangles align well with sofas.  A good rule of thumb is to have your coffee table be 1/2 to 2/3 the size of your sofa.  This helps create visual proportion & allows access to the coffee table from each seat on the sofa.

What’s a Welt Cord?

Dear Designer Detective,

I often hear you refer to a welt cord when pointing out things on the furniture you showcase on Good Morning Texas.  What exactly is a welt cord?

~Tina D.
McKinney, TX

Dear Tina,

Great question!  A welt cord is simply a fabric covered cord that follows the seam of a chair cushion, sofa cushion, or pillows.  A welt cord helps give upholstery a more finished tailored look.  The two types of welt cords are a self-welt & a contrasting welt.  A self welt is when the cord is done out of the same fabric.  A welt cord that is done out of a different fabric is called a contrasting welt cord.  Contrasting welt cords add lots of style & pop to your upholstery.  I just love to use them!

On this Sherrill chair, we used a contrasting welt cord out of a rich chocolate brown velvet.

On this Century sofa, we’ve used a contrasting welt cord out of the same leather used on the frame of the sofa.

White Hot!

Today on Good Morning Texas, I featured a sofa by Century that has everyone around IBB white hot!  With style that seems to channel Chanel, this beauty will have you swooning when you see it in person.  The hand painted white chairs & leather cocktail ottoman are also by Century.

From Toddler to Teen: Girl’s Room

GirlsSpringRoom

Friday on Good Morning Texas I showcased a fun spring inspired little girl’s room & adjoining play area.  The bright fun color palette was inspired by spring and has the type of design longevity to carry your little sweetie from toddler to early teen years.  Watch the segment here.

We used a fun array of fabrics in lime, purple, hot pink & yellow.  The walls are painted a sunny yellow & we picked up the pattern from the duvet cover & created a border half way up the wall for the room.  Wooden orange flowers adorn the wall above the headboard.  We used classic white painted furniture that allows the bright bold fabrics & patterns to be the showstoppers for the room.
girlsTicTacToe

In the adjoining playroom, we jazzed up white walls by hand painting “tic tac toe” in bold colors up the wall.  We dressed the windows with fun hot orange leopard print drapery panels.

If you’d like to see the room in person, you can venture out to the Horizon Homes model home in Little Elm, Texas.

Video: My top 5 favorite chairs right now!

If you’re looking for that special something to liven up your decor, a fabulous chair or pair of chairs can easily do the trick!  I recently highlighted my top 5 favorite chairs of the moment for Good Morning Texas.

Watch the video here.

Favorite Chair #1

This leather & hair on hide upholstered chair with antique brass nailhead trim would work wonderfully in a study featuring a rich warm brown color palette.

Favorite Chair #2

I LOVE this jewel tone beauty from John Richard!  The rich colors paired with gold leaf detail make this chair such a luxurious treat!  This has been a very popular chair at IBB.

Favorite Chair #3

Now, you all know that I am a sucker when it comes to a fabulous piece featuring eglomise!  So, it’s no wonder this stylish number (again from John Richard) made my list of faves!

Favorite Chair #4

The color of the year for 2010 is turquoise, but how about a richer deep teal for a pop of color?  Use these comfy chairs to add style to a family room, study or swanky sitting area.

The embroidered branch pattern on this Sherrill chair is to die for!  We contrasted the outside of the frame with a sumptuous chocolate brown velvet & then added some additional eye candy by using polished nickel nail head trim to finish off the look.

**All of the above chairs are available at IBB Design Furniture Showroom**

Mini Make-over

It’s time for a make-over!  It’s a mini project for me.  I’ve finally had it!   My office at IBB is in major need of some TLC.  You see, we’ve been at our current location for more than five years now.  I was pregnant with my daughter & super busy at the time of the move, so I decided to put the task of “officially” designing my office space off for a later date.  Well, five years later, things are still super busy around here (Praise God!)  & my walls are still bare (with the exception of a print of the new studios I was given when I started at Good Morning Texas).  My desk chair is oh-so-comfy, but a MAJOR eye sore!  My guest chairs for clients & other business guests are pretty, but they’re just not me.

Last weekend while I was up here working on a client project, I finally reached my boiling point.  Part of creating inspiring interiors, I believe, is surrounding ourselves with things we find inspiring.  My office, where I spend a great deal of time each day, falls very short of awe inspiring.

I whipped out some fabric books & my Benjamin Moore paint deck & picked out some fabulosity for my new digs.  I wanted something fun, girly, young & hip.  I will be using hints of fuschia (because I love pink & I think my fiance would kill me if I ever tried to use pink in the home we’ll soon be sharing!)  I’ll be re-covering my desk chair & the guest chairs, painting the walls, adding some art & lighting & switching out the big bulky armoire for a sleek mirrored console.  I’ll be keeping my desk unit (even though I probably should eventually update that too) because I love it’s functionality & quite frankly I just don’t want to spend the money right now.  I’ll be tackling this in stages (in my spare time:  note to self; find spare time! ~ LOL!) so I will post the after pictures when it’s complete.  For now,  check out the color palette as well as some before photos below.
selectedfabrics

These are the fabrics I’ve selected.  Since you haven’t heard me shut up about my excitement that turquoise is the 2010 color of the year, are you even surprised that I’d be using it in my own surroundings?  I’m contrasting it with the rich midnight blue velvet.  I’ll be pulling in hints of my favorite color pink through the fuchsia in the stripe fabric as well as some accessories.  I”ll show you & explain where everything is going in the After post when the room is complete.  Gotta let the reveal be a surprise…

deskchairbefore

Desk chair before
I know, I know.  Hideous, right?  I use that cozy turquoise throw everyday ( It’s always so dang cold in my office! ), but it actually helps disguise my ugly desk chair too ~ LOL!
armoirebefore

My chunky clunky armoire is getting the boot.  It’s really just serving as a storage unit for JUNK!  Hasta la vista baby!

wallcolorbefore

This shows off the wall color before.  I’ll be changing it to a bright white for a cheery update and to bring some life into my office.  I have no windows in here, so I’m ready for a light bright feel.  As of now, I’ve selected Benjamin Moore white dove.  I’ll be painting a test sample this weekend.

guestchairbefore

I’ll be recovering these chairs & adding some cool detailing to give them a fun playful update.

If I’m feeling a little frisky, I will probably chronicle this makeover via twitter, so make sure you follow me here.

Fresh Take on Turquoise

Yesterday, I introduced you to my fabulous friend & our first guest blogger, Shelly Rosenberg.  Today, she shares her fresh take on the 2010 color of the year featuring our good friend & jewelry designer, Elizabeth Showers.  Enjoy!

Fresh is the new fix in an economy that has us feeling deep blue. Take it up a notch with a hue to good to be true! Who says? Pantone, the Oz of the color wheel, gives Turquoise the title: Color of the Year, 2010! We need vibrant, chin-to-the-sun fun. Let’s walk like Egyptians and embrace this historic tint they honored for it’s restorative and healing power.

Energy is not all it’s got- fashion says it’s hip and haute. Dive into your favorite mags and notice it in the most delicate of porcelain, sleek urban furnishings, punchy textiles and the most exquisite bijoux!

Bling is the thing for our beloved local designer, Elizabeth Showers. Her designs celebrate the most refined version of this gem. Her work has been featured in O Magazine, Town & Country and Vogue and is treasured by A-list celebs. In a word, her art is simply stunning. This designer aims to “empower all women to feel beautiful.” Aligned with her trademark logo, The Hope Star, her affair with turquoise offers inspiration to us and integrity to a stone often overlooked.

A sampling of some of the magnificent turquoise jewelry by Elizabeth Showers.

So taken was she that her new ride is now all the rage. Years ahead of the curve, London’s Mini Cooper is fashion forward…In her limited edition, Elizabeth cruises in style. Here, the plucky partner to our featured shade is brown- in yummy shades of chocolate and toffee! Pleasure and sophistication coexist with Elizabeth at the helm.

Check out Elizabeth’s fab jewelry up against the chocolate brown interior with turquoise stitching of her tres chic Mini Cooper!  Can you say hot???!!!

Unveiling John-Richard

Drum roll please…

It’s here!  I’m so excited to share a sneak peek at our exclusive John-Richard Gallery now at IBB Design Furniture Showroom!  If you haven’t had the pleasure of getting to know John-Richard before, allow me to indulge you.

John-Richard was originally founded in 1980 as a wall art & decor business. They are hands down one of my very favorite home furnishings lines.  I have several of their pieces in my own home.  Today, they have expanded the business to include lighting, mirrors, accessories, botanicals, accent furniture, case goods, & upholstery.  They are known for their unique look to the furniture market crafted by cutting edge finishes, materials & other resources to manufacturer their goods. Their elegant sophistication is functional for today’s home, however their new designs are implemented with the idea of becoming tomorrow’s family treasures.

Take a sneak peek at the gallery inside IBB…

On Magazine Feature

I am so excited to have been chosen as one of a handful of Dallas designers to be featured in a spread in On Magazine.  They asked us to where to find our favorite designs & cool things to create our favorite rooms.

Here’s what I said:
My favorite designs can be found right in our showroom. We sell right off of the floor, so our vignettes are constantly evolving. With a large staff of talented designers, our showroom is a creative collaboration of a multitude of design styles showcased in the vignettes throughout the store. I love this bedroom vignette because of the fresh purple paired with the spunky tangerine. The bed makes quite a statement on its own. However, I’d have to say that my favorite thing here is the square white & orange bench ottomans that add a stylish yet functional “pop” at the end of the bed.”

Here’s a sneak peak at the featured spread for their July 2009 issue (they put me right at the front of the article :-).

A place to set your drink…

You absolutely MUST have one of these in your home!  They call it a “Martini Table”, a swanky name for a small occasional table.  It seems that it may have also gotten its name from the shape.  Most martini tables have long slender stem like bases with a small top.  They’re made to service one chair or one end of a small sofa or settee.  I’ve seen them in a myriad of designs from eglomaise and other mirrored surfaces to steel or wood (like the one pictured).  They are uber-functional!  Just about every furniture manufacturer offers at least one style .

I love the idea of using a table like this in your formal living area, family, room or study.  Actually, you could use it just about anywhere you need a place to set your drink.  When there is not enough space to use a standard end table, this is the perfect solution!

Gotta have it!!!

Get some Glamour!

Today is my birthday!  So, I thought it would only be appropriate to have some glamour & bling today!  This amazing piece is by John Richards, so we should expect nothing less than a real show stopper!  They actually make lamps out of this very same design (see next photo).  Pricey?  Yes, but it’s like purchasing a fabulous pair of Manolo Blahnik’s (Remember ~ it’s my birthday! ~ insert wish list here).  The splurge is well warranted.  A guilty pleasure if you will.  Your home will be gorgeous!

It’s pretty obvious that I could be charged with over-using the word fabulous 😉  But, come one!  What other words could you use to describe this chandelier?  It’s fabulous!  Here’s some other words that come to mind:  stunning, glamorous, gorgeous, sparkley (that would be a made up Shay word ~ who doesn’t love sparkle?), jaw-dropping,  GOTTA HAVE IT!

Help me out here…  What do you think?
