One Room Challenge Week One

orc

Hey everyone!  It’s been a minute 😉  Things have been crazy busy around IBB & we haven’t been blogging as frequently as we should.  That’s all about to change though because I’ve decided to join in all of the fun of Calling it Home’s One Room Challenge!  I have followed the past challenges on social media & always thought to myself that it would be fun to be a part of the six week makeover challenge.  As an interior designer, projects in my own home usually head toward the bottom of the priority list as my time is devoted to my clients.

After living in our home for five years now, it’s time to freshen up a few more areas.  We remodeled a few rooms & most of the flooring when we first bought our home but budget and time constraints kept me from going all out.  I knew this was a home we would raise our two girls in so I wanted to take risks in the designs and make sure everything was carefully thought out.  I’ve allowed myself to take my time to create spaces that I enjoyed coming home to & made me never want to leave.  Plus, it’s only fair to give my sweet hubby a little breather between projects 😉

For the One Room Challenge, I’m diving in to makeover my 10 year old daughter’s bathroom & bedroom.

Jaylie room before

Her current bedroom is cute, don’t get me wrong.  I designed the scheme in our old house when she was 4 years old & carried it over when we moved into our new house.  She’ll be 11 in December and she has her own style now & we both agree it’s time to create a space that is uniquely her.  The room also just doesn’t function well for her.  There is little to no storage & her closet is tiny.  After our air conditioner leaked thru her bathroom ceiling, we knew we could no longer procrastinate her bathroom remodel.  The One Room Challenge was really the push I needed to “get er done” & move forward with executing our entire plan.  The more I thought about the space & how it would function for her for years to come, the more I brainstormed out-of-the-box ideas to give her more storage and better function.  I’ve got big plans & grand ideas & we couldn’t be more excited!  The demo has begun & there’s no turning back now so stay tuned for progress updates over the next 6 weeks & the big reveal on Thursday, November 12th.

I’ll be back next week to discuss the design plan & progress updates.  For now, I’ll leave you with one small glimpse of our inspiration for her room…

Making the most of what you have!

Happy Friday design devotees!  I have a treat in store for you today!  I’ve asked Kevin Wild, one of IBB’s designers, to guest blog for us today.  He’s giving us a quick peek into a project he is working on with a client to show us how to make the most of what you have.  Take it away Kevin…

Design is all about putting your unique personal touch in your home.

Sometimes you even have to “work with whatchya got!”   This is exactly what I did in my client’s new home.  A few months back my clients moved in, and like many of my clients, she had wallpaper in her formal dining room. She was ready to rip it down and paint.   I told her, “No way.”   Her wallpaper was fabulous!

I used their wallpaper as the inspiration for the entire design.  A lot of times you may feel like patterns are too busy. Sometimes this is true with an all-over pattern on a chair or wallpaper.   An easy tip and trick is to break up the pattern to give your eye somewhere to rest!

In this dining room I broke up the busy pattern of the wallpaper with two fantastic John Richards elgomise floor mirrors.  This also allowed the dining room to bounce light all around the room.  In addition, the mirrors are gold leafed which helps tie in the gold from the wallpaper at the same time contrasting with the darkeness of the wallpaper.

The real icing on the cake in this room is the unique designer chairs from Guy Chaddock.   The tone-on-tone structured pattern contrasts with the more natural curves of the rest of the room.  The lighter fabric also provides a fresh contrast with the darker patterned wallpaper.  The clean lines of the chairs give the room an updated feel.

At the end of the day, using elements and details that are currently in your space to your advantage and adding a few new pieces to freshen it up can lead you to the design that fits you uniquely.

-Kevin Wild

Thank you Kevin!  It’s fun to see how just by changing things a bit & adding a few new pieces can give a room’s design a whole new perspective.   A room can still look fabulous even if you’re forced to work with what you’ve got!

Happy weekend & happy decorating everyone!

Halloween Tabletop

Today on Good Morning Texas I brought in a fabulous hammered metal dining table all set & ready to go for a sweet Halloween Soiree!  Watch the segment here.  I created the napkin ties, place cards, treat tags, & Happy Halloween labels with the help from my fabulous friend & amazing graphic designer Wendy.  The tags & labels can all be printed out from your home computer.  I printed them all on card stock, but they can also be printed on sticky labels.  Check out all of the details below to create this fun “Candy Corn” themed tabletop for your party this weekend!

The place mats were made from Halloween scrapbook paper glued onto black card stock.  Use a festive ribbon, like my trick or treat candy corn ribbon to tie on the “Bone Appetit” napkin ties.

Make your own coordinating vases. 1) use a large vegetable or small coffee can 2) wrap scrapbook paper around the can & finish off with some festive ribbon 3) place a piece of floral foam in the bottom 4) arrange your favorite yellow & orange flowers in each can

Orange soda bottles bring lots of great color to the table.  To make them more festive 1) wash off the original labels with soap & hot water 2) download & print my “Happy Halloween” labels 3) wrap the bottle with a strip of coordinating ribbon or scrapbook paper 4) glue the “Happy Halloween” label on top

Caramel apples are a great favor to give your guests at a Halloween party.  It’s a sweet treat to end the night & you can easily make them yourself or buy them already made.  My absolute favorite place to get caramel apples is from Mrs. Prindables. They are to die for yummy  & so beautiful.  The presentation is amazing.  They also work great for hostess gifts!

Happy Halloween my friends!

Tip in a Zip: Time to Edit!

Yearning for a quick makeover that won’t cost you a dime?  It’s time to edit!  Update your traditional style by de-cluttering & ridding your home of out of date accessories.  Today’s design styles call for cleaner looks without a lot of fuss.  Select the items you love the most to live amongst.  Think “less is more”!  Not every inch of your table top & wall space needs to be covered.  Try this at your home this weekend & you’ll feel instantly refreshed.  Your home will breathe new life & a new look!

Fancy Word Friday: Case Goods

If you’re around a professional designer for any period of time, chances are you will probably hear them use the term “case goods”.  This industry term refers to home furnishings that are made primarily out of wood.  Think end tables, armoires, consoles & cocktail tables.

Here are a few of my favorite case goods:

New Gotham City Table in Ivory by Global Views

Thompson Side Table by Thomas O’Brien for Hickory Chair

Raffles Cocktail Table by Century furniture.  You may remember me showing this to you for my 4th of July segment on GMT.

Morgan Media cabinet by Thomas O’Brien for Hickory Chair featuring a hydraulic lift that can accommodate a TV up to 42″.

Game table by Larry Laslo for Ferguson Copeland.

Video: My top 5 favorite chairs right now!

If you’re looking for that special something to liven up your decor, a fabulous chair or pair of chairs can easily do the trick!  I recently highlighted my top 5 favorite chairs of the moment for Good Morning Texas.

Watch the video here.

Favorite Chair #1

This leather & hair on hide upholstered chair with antique brass nailhead trim would work wonderfully in a study featuring a rich warm brown color palette.

Favorite Chair #2

I LOVE this jewel tone beauty from John Richard!  The rich colors paired with gold leaf detail make this chair such a luxurious treat!  This has been a very popular chair at IBB.

Favorite Chair #3

Now, you all know that I am a sucker when it comes to a fabulous piece featuring eglomise!  So, it’s no wonder this stylish number (again from John Richard) made my list of faves!

Favorite Chair #4

The color of the year for 2010 is turquoise, but how about a richer deep teal for a pop of color?  Use these comfy chairs to add style to a family room, study or swanky sitting area.

The embroidered branch pattern on this Sherrill chair is to die for!  We contrasted the outside of the frame with a sumptuous chocolate brown velvet & then added some additional eye candy by using polished nickel nail head trim to finish off the look.

**All of the above chairs are available at IBB Design Furniture Showroom**

Christmas Entertaining

A very Merry Christmas to you all!  I hope you are having a very blessed day & enjoying some quality time with your family.  This is my absolute favorite time of year.  I love to decorate my house and my friend’s & client’s homes for this joyous season.  I also love to entertain.  We really enjoy cooking in our family, so we often throw get togethers & cocktail parties.  Christmas is no exception.  We recently hosted a Christmas open house at our home for family, friends & clients.  The night was festive and the halls were decked!

My mom & I cooked all of the food.  We had a huge spread of beef tenderloin, shrimp cocktail, dips, stuffed mushrooms, fruits, cheeses & yummy desserts.  I even played bartender & mixed candy cane & tinsel tinis.  The evening was a huge success & we enjoyed sharing in the joys of the holidays with everyone.

Our entry way

Our formal living room.  We set out Chirstmas cookies, peppermint bark & sundried tomato cheese spread & crackers for guests to munch on as they socialized.

The dinner buffet

Festive Chocolate cake (We bought this one at Central Market)

The Martini bar set up

The candy cane & tinsel tinis.  I wrapped sparkle pipe cleaners around the stems of the tinsel tinis.  Get the candy cane tini recipe here.

Santa Challah bread 🙂

Chair decor for our gameroom chairs (as seen on GMT)

Family room coffee table decor.  I collect vintage Santas.  We had a contest for guests to guess how many Santas we had in the house.  We had a total of 55 including the ornaments on the tree!

Me & my co-host, my wonderful fiance Brian all ready for the party.

2010 Color of the year

I am giddy with excitement today!  Pantone, the global authority on color, announced that 2010’s color of the year is… drum roll please… TURQUOISE!  Can we say YIPPEE!!!???  As I told you previously, my new fav color combo is turquoise & tangerine.  I love, love, love the color turquoise.  I can remember traveling to Santa Fe with my parents as a child & my must have souvenir was always a piece of turquoise jewelry.  The color just makes me happy!  Pantone describes the color as inviting & luminous.  I must say that I undoubtedly agree.

Turquoise had a dominant prescence at the Fall 2009 International Home Furnishings Market.  So, this announcement is really no surprise to me.  In fact, I think I really would have been more shocked if they hadn’t chosen turquoise as the color of the year for 2010.  Here’s a look at a compilation of some of my favorite uses of turquoise in both home interiors and fashion.

Style and Substance

I am super excited to share a fabulous new book with you!  It’s called Style And Substance, The Best of Elle Decor.  If you want style inspiration for your home, this is where to find it.  The book is loaded with images from the archives of Elle Decor.  Can we say Yippee???!!!  This is your chance to get up close & personal with the fabulous homes that have been featured in the chic magazine.  Consider it your VIP or backstage pass to some never seen before photos of these luxurious abodes.  I was more than excited to get my copy signed by the author extraordinare herself, Margaret Russell tonight at the Elle Decor party in High Point, North Carolina.  I haven’t been able to put it down all night.  The photography & rooms featured are just amazing!  Not only is it full of stunning imagery, but it also makes quite a statement on a cocktail table.  My friends, take note; this is the perfect hostess gift or stocking stuffer for this holiday season.

You can get a copy for yourself (and your friends) here.

Accessorize It!

Is something missing from your home?  You’ve bought all of the big furniture pieces, but it just doesn’t seem right.  You may take a look around & realize that you’ve forgotten to accessorize.  Accessories are like jewelry for your home.  They can help tie your whole look together.   Here’s a few ideas to pull your look together & make your home super stylish 😉

Find a fabulous piece of art.  Use a floral and pottery to pull out the dominant colors of your color palette.

Here’s a fresh take for some coffee table decor.  I love the mixture of textures on these decorative balls.  Some are leather, some are smooth & shiny & some are adorned with seashells but they all compliment the same neutral color palette.  Combined in a bowl together, they make a beautiful statement.

Dress up a casual leather recliner with a luxurious faux mink pillow.  Va-va-va-voom!!!

Animal prints are not just for fabrics.  Try these sleek zebra decorative boxes.  They’ll most definitely liven up a bookcase.  Or, try a more practical solution & use it to hide unsightly remote controls in your family or media room.
