Beautify your Bookshelves!

JT is back on the blog again today with some great advice on accessorizing your bookshelves.

So often clients send out a “911” when it comes to accessorizing bookshelves.  It can be tricky ~ figuring out what to put in them and such.  Here are some things that I try to incorporate when I’m decorating bookshelves.

This is a monster!  A big dark empty wall unit.  First of all, don’t keep all of the shelves the same height.  I think mixing it up makes it more interesting, so adjust them for varying interest.  You can see in the second picture how many I removed from my client’s wall unit. Play with the scale of your accessories.  To avoid monotony, make sure you choose items of different sizes.  Create an opening large enough for artwork or a sculpture.  Place your larger items in the shelves, not all together, maybe one in the middle left, another on the top right and then fill in the other spaces.

photo1

You’ll notice that I also incorporated some colorful things into this client’s wall unit to make it come alive.  In the smaller openings use a great box or group of books.  I also wanted to make it personal.  Showcase something that was brought back from your trip to Venice or found on a beach.  Using items that have meaning to you will also help tell your story and reflect your life in your home’s design.  I also love family photos mixed in, with some great new picture frames you found at IBB Design Fine Furnishings.

Be unconventional, if you have grandma’s china or a great collection of silver, use this has a springboard for your display design.  Things look better grouped in a collection, rather than spread out.  It makes more of an impact.

Place your larger items in the shelves, not all together, maybe one in the middle left, another on the top right and then fill in the other spaces.

You can also choose a color pallet and keep it say Turquoise, Yellow and Green.  Then when you’re out shopping you know what you need to buy and what to look out for.  This is a great look for a more transitional space.

I hope that a few of these tips and tricks will help with your bookshelf design and remember IBB Design Fine Furnishings has gorgeous accessories to help with the process.

Sneak Peek! MillionAir Project by JT

We’re thrilled to have IBB Designer James Turner, a.k.a JT, blogging for us today!  He’s giving us a sneak peek inside a project he is working on for MillionAir.  Let’s see what he’s up to!

I’ve been so lucky to be working on a project for MillionAir in Addison.  They called me and wanted me to warm up the space in their new state of the art hanger.    We’ve done quite a bit, but the one thing that I’ve heard time and time again from the female staff at MillionAir is their love and appreciation of the women’s facility.

Here it is in the before stage.  Honestly, not much to write home about.  Utilitarian and lackluster to say the least.  I can see where it needed a little enhancement with the overall design scheme for the sitting area.

I brought in two fabulous chairs from Jessica Charles in a refined champagne fabric.  The line of the chairs have a very aerodynamic feel, fitting of a Jet.  In addition, we’ve nixed the office “box store” table and in its place added an elegant eglomise chest to house all the little things one needs.  A sophisticated phalaenopsis orchid placed on the chest with a collection of perfumes and we have ourselves one swanky ladies room.

You too can incorporate new things to vamp up your own guest bath.  Maybe you have room for a small table for a floral to sit.  Or perhaps some nice monogrammed towels.  Try replacing the normally boring overhead “bathroom bar” light fixture with something more stylish. Taking the time to dress up your powder bath will really make an impact with your guests.  At IBB Design Fine Furnishings, we have so many things to help make living in style easy!

Bespoke Bench

Good morning design devotess! You’re in for a treat this morning. I’ve asked one of IBB’s designers, Brandy Scott, to blog for us & share some behind the scenes details from one of our recent projects out at Craig Ranch.

I’m so excited to post my first blog with our IBB Design Fine Furnishings followers! Today I want to share one of my favorite recent projects, a custom bench we created for a luxury model townhome in Craig Ranch. You may have seen Shay post it snapshot it on Facebook a couple of weeks ago.

Add some va va voom to your foyer! A bench in the entry is welcoming and sets the design tone for your home. This piece started with Beth and Shay’s vision for a high back bench that was an updated take on a wing chair. We discussed elements of the furniture that we liked best such as straight sides to the wings and the bottom seat deck off the floor with tapered legs to make the bench feel lighter. A single seat cushion and tight back added to its streamlined effect.

Deciding on the correct proportions was important to making the bench an eye catcher! We turned up the volume with an exaggerated seat back height and an overall width that ensured we could avoid seams on the back. To execute the design I did a quick sketch so we could see how all the elements came together and for our fabricator’s reference.

Finally, the finishing details elevate this piece to the next level! A bold stripe in a tone on tone grey and white coordinates with the overall color palette in the house and polished chrome nail heads reinforce the lines of bench. The black and white art surrounding the bench really makes it pop.

So whether it’s a one of kind custom piece designed just for you or a ready made bench, consider seating to welcome your guests to your home with style!

Wallcoverings that Wow!

If you have yet to be informed, let me dazzle you with some exciting news… Wallpaper is back & with a vengeance I must say!  I asked my good friend Shelly Rosenberg to give us her take on some simply stylish wall coverings.

Shelly’s take:
I have always had a soft spot for anything Asian. And now, I have discovered the best reason to fawn…the Chinese invented wallpaper!  The first rice wallpapers go back as far as 200 BC!!  The Orient has a unique form of ornamentation. The motifs are often serene and organic. I especially love the subtle suggestion of movement in the two modern patterns below.

In honor of our 2010 Color of the Year’ and this month’s feature, I will delight you with a bit more of turquoise and her cousins… Any powder room becomes exquisite wrapped in a Tiffany-box blue floral like this one above. And can you imagine the pleasure this dogwood  scene would give guests in your dining room?

As much as I adore the traditional elegance of a tried-and-true paper, there is much fun to be had in this medium. Choose any era in modern history and you can have a paper that speaks its language! I grew up with a very chic mother who had our entire home wrapped in the ever-popular 1980s flamestitch! And it’s still HOT!

Many of you are nervous to commit, I know, but the pleasure is so beyond what the hesitation is worth! Why wallpaper? It can anchor an entire design scheme- take a little piece that makes you swoon and have your designer build a room around it! Have an architectural element that has you baffled? Disguise it! If you just cannot use the paste, frame a fabulous find and stare at its beauty! Search the web for examples of designer wall coverings. But, find the best and most unique eye candy through your favorite interior designer. Delicious.

Mini Make-over

It’s time for a make-over!  It’s a mini project for me.  I’ve finally had it!   My office at IBB is in major need of some TLC.  You see, we’ve been at our current location for more than five years now.  I was pregnant with my daughter & super busy at the time of the move, so I decided to put the task of “officially” designing my office space off for a later date.  Well, five years later, things are still super busy around here (Praise God!)  & my walls are still bare (with the exception of a print of the new studios I was given when I started at Good Morning Texas).  My desk chair is oh-so-comfy, but a MAJOR eye sore!  My guest chairs for clients & other business guests are pretty, but they’re just not me.

Last weekend while I was up here working on a client project, I finally reached my boiling point.  Part of creating inspiring interiors, I believe, is surrounding ourselves with things we find inspiring.  My office, where I spend a great deal of time each day, falls very short of awe inspiring.

I whipped out some fabric books & my Benjamin Moore paint deck & picked out some fabulosity for my new digs.  I wanted something fun, girly, young & hip.  I will be using hints of fuschia (because I love pink & I think my fiance would kill me if I ever tried to use pink in the home we’ll soon be sharing!)  I’ll be re-covering my desk chair & the guest chairs, painting the walls, adding some art & lighting & switching out the big bulky armoire for a sleek mirrored console.  I’ll be keeping my desk unit (even though I probably should eventually update that too) because I love it’s functionality & quite frankly I just don’t want to spend the money right now.  I’ll be tackling this in stages (in my spare time:  note to self; find spare time! ~ LOL!) so I will post the after pictures when it’s complete.  For now,  check out the color palette as well as some before photos below.
selectedfabrics

These are the fabrics I’ve selected.  Since you haven’t heard me shut up about my excitement that turquoise is the 2010 color of the year, are you even surprised that I’d be using it in my own surroundings?  I’m contrasting it with the rich midnight blue velvet.  I’ll be pulling in hints of my favorite color pink through the fuchsia in the stripe fabric as well as some accessories.  I”ll show you & explain where everything is going in the After post when the room is complete.  Gotta let the reveal be a surprise…

Desk chair before
I know, I know.  Hideous, right?  I use that cozy turquoise throw everyday ( It’s always so dang cold in my office! ), but it actually helps disguise my ugly desk chair too ~ LOL!
armoirebefore

My chunky clunky armoire is getting the boot.  It’s really just serving as a storage unit for JUNK!  Hasta la vista baby!

wallcolorbefore

This shows off the wall color before.  I’ll be changing it to a bright white for a cheery update and to bring some life into my office.  I have no windows in here, so I’m ready for a light bright feel.  As of now, I’ve selected Benjamin Moore white dove.  I’ll be painting a test sample this weekend.

guestchairbefore

I’ll be recovering these chairs & adding some cool detailing to give them a fun playful update.

If I’m feeling a little frisky, I will probably chronicle this makeover via twitter, so make sure you follow me here.

Greetings design lovers!  It’s still winter time & there’s nothing better than a cozy environment during the cold winter months.  Today on Good Morning Texas, I gave a few pointers to help you create a warm interior for your home.  I showcased a yummy sofa from Century in a leather/fabric combination, a rustic (yet sleek) coffee table from Henredon, & two different chair options to help bring the look together.  The whole setting makes me want to escape to the mountains in Aspen or Vail!

Happy New Year!

Woohoo!  2010 is here!  I hope you all had a fun & safe New Year’s Eve.  We had a very quiet & lovely evening.  We sipped champagne in the hot tub, watched movies & the Platinum Weddings marathon (the new season premiere is Sunday Jan 3rd & I can’t wait!) & enjoyed being entertained with song & dance by my little princess.  Quality family time is priceless!!!  After a very busy year, it was so nice to just sit & chill.

Finding the perfect Fabrics

Kravet, one of my very favorite “go to” fabric lines had a wonderful post today on their blog about selecting the right fabrics for upholstery.  Even as a design professional, I found the knowledge & advice they provided in the blog post to be very valuable.  It’s a worthwhile read for anyone thinking about or in the process of selecting new or re-covering upholstery in their home.  Read their post on upholstery fabric tips here.

Kravet has an extensive library of fabrics to choose from.  They really do have something for everyone at just about every price point.  You may remember me telling you about their new KravetSmart program featuring a more cost conscious approach.

They are also very well known for their ingenious collaborations with interior designers such as Candice Olson, Barclay Butera, Alexa Hampton, Barbara Barry, Calvin Klein & many more.

However, the pièce de résistance for me is their Guaranteed in Stock books.  These books are a lifeline for me when I’m trying to meet a quick deadline for clients.  Case in point ~ I had a rather distressing moment at my own home last week.  Upon “fluffing” my formal living room in preparation for dinner party guests, I discovered that my sweet sweet dog had decided to make my living room chairs her daily place of resting, licking paws & other doggy propensities.  The cushions were in shambles 🙁  With our holiday party less than 2 weeks away, I had to think fast!  I went straight to one of Kravet’s guaranteed in stock books that contained my home’s color palette & selected the perfect material to begin the resurrection of my beautiful chairs.  I had the farbic in hand 3 days later.  My amazing upholsterer will have them back to me on Thursday, leaving me 2 days to spare until our party.  Whew!  Looks like Sassy (my sweet sweet dog) is giving me living room chairs for Christmas 😉

Finding the perfect fabrics can take time.  Follow the advice of professionals in the design industry or work with a professional designer to help you find fantastic fabrics for your home.
