Master Makeover

IBB designer, Shannon Gidney, recently transformed the master bedroom for some of her clients. Take a peek at what the room looked like before.

The room felt dated & needed a new fresh look!

Shannon selected great basics like the upholstered bed with tufting & nail heads in a neutral fabric & mirrored nightstands. A pop of orange was brought in with two patterned pillows & one solid on the bed. The bench at the end of the bed allows another opportunity for pattern & offers seating for the space. Fun mirrors and perfectly scaled lamps add the finishing touches to the design.

Project Renovation: Oscarlicious Master Bedroom

That will be the word of the day ~ Oscarlicious!  Why, you ask?   As far as design inspiration goes, I was particularly drawn to two dresses at the 2011 Academy Awards worn by Gwyneth Paltrow & Hilary Swank.   The show stopping designer gowns sum up the modern glamour style I’m seeking to portray in our master bedroom.  They instantly sent me into a creative frenzy when I saw them.

I’ve been planning this dream bedroom of mine in my head for years & I’m finally taking the leap to create it.  Not overdone.  Not heavy.  Simple elegance & sophistication that exudes glamour.  Touches of traditional combined with modern options & fabulous finishes.  I love the metallic effect that both of these dresses offer & the textures of the fabrics are to die for!  The colors are even in the range of the color palette I have chosen for our bedroom.  Platinum, nickel, cream & gold are the stars in the room.  I’ve painted the walls Benjamin Moore’s Pale Oak & our trim color is Benjamin Moore’s Could White.  We have great windows in our sitting area & the room gets fantastic natural light.

So, let me give you a sneak peek at my game plan.

This is the bed I designed for my husband & I.  It is my dream bed!  I have been searching for a bed like this my whole life!  No joke!  I worked with CR Currin ( a line we carry at IBB) to tweak one of their new beds to carry out my vision.  It’s upholstered in a chenille tweed from Kravet.  It’s hard to tell from the photo but there are metallic threads woven into the fabric.  The posts are covered in a smoky antique mirror & the bed is finished in a stunning silver leaf.  The factory sent me a photo of it when it was done.  It is shipping this week & I could not be more excited to get it into our room!

To set off our gorgeous bed, I wanted to find something really spectacular to accent the bed wall.  When I saw this wallpaper from Albert Van Luit, my jaw dropped!  It was just the thing to do this bed justice.  It’s a natural grass cloth wallpaper with a large scaled Damask pattern created by silver & gold leaf.   The texture is delicious.  This has my name written all over it!  It makes a powerful statement, so I’m not covering the entire room in it.  That would be crossing over into the overdone category & that’s not what I’m going for.  It will be a fabulous focal point behind the bed.  It’s brand new to the collection, so it won’t be in until the end of March.  Good things come to those who wait…  I’m dying to get it up in the room!

Lighting for the room will take on a more modern flair.  I love these selections juxtaposed with the Damask wallpaper.  The lamps I’ve chosen are from Global Views & very grand in scale.  They will sit like sculptural art on our nightstands.  The inside of the mercury glass base lights up & shows off it’s illustrious qualities.  It’s simply magnificent.  You can light just the base (romantic ambiance), just the lamp (task lighting), or both at the same time (you get the best of both worlds!).  The chandelier from Fine Art Lamps will hang over our bed.  The photo shows the design of the chandelier.  I’ve ordered it in a silver leaf finish with a translucent mica shade & metal frame.  It will showcase the silver & gold finishes being used in the room in one piece.

I hope you enjoyed today’s sneak peek into my house!  I can’t wait to share the room with you when I get it all done.  Mixing finishes in a room can give you a brilliant interior.  You just have to find the balance.  Get inspired & go make your room Oscarlicious!

Sneak Peek Saturday: Ottomans

Look what just came in to IBB for one of my clients!  I’m a huge fan of adding small benches & ottomans to a room.  They give you additional seating & can also be a fun way to add some style through great fabrics.  Today’s sneak peek is from a project I am working on in California.  The home belongs to a young hip single man who requested the home be done in layers of neutrals.  We’re primarily using taupes, blacks, shades of white & gray.

CaliprojectXbenchpg

The X bench by Century.  I’m using two of these on either side of a fireplace in the formal living room with some very cool art above each one.  The chrome base will add a sleek look  to the room.  The cushions are made out of a rich velvet stripe by Barclay Butera for Kravet.  I am a HUGE fan of Barclay’s fabrics!  I’m using several of them for this project.

CaliprojectHCottoman

This is one of my all time  favorite ottomans.  It’s by Hickory Chair.  I’m using two of these at the foot of the bed in the master bedroom.  The cushions are out of a soft supple gray velvet.  The bottom fabric is out of a small herringbone print in gray & white.  I added chrome nail heads to highlight the beautiful shape of the ottomans.

I’ll be installing the home in a few months, so stay tuned to see a few of the finished shots of the home!

4 Tips to Start A Bedroom Makeover

Last week I featured my 4 tips to start your bedroom makeover on GMT.  You can watch it here. I figured you may like to have a little additional eye candy to help inspire you.

Tip #1
Start with a fabulous bed!

This stunning upholstered bed is one I designed & made for a client.  It’s graceful curves, tufting and nail head trim detail make it a real statement piece for their bedroom.

Monochromatic beauty from the pages of Elle Decor.  Every fabulous bed deserves a fabulous bench.

Check out this hottie ~  a luscious red velvet headboard.  I always love a red, black & white color scheme.  This one is executed so well because they let the showstopping red headboard stand on it’s own with only a few smaller doses of red in the bedroom.  This allows the black & white to balance the rest of the room.

I’m a sucker for a great iron canopy bed.  I had one very similar to this one in college.  I also had sheer drapery panels hanging from each of the posts.  It makes your room feel like a quaint little getaway.  This bedroom could easily fit right into my home.

Tip #2
Don’t skimp ~ get yourself some magnificent bedding!

Gorgeous bedding by Alessandra

I love the idea of using drapery to frame a bed.  It’s just so romantic.

Another stunning bedroom featured in Elle Decor.  They layering of the different hues of blue has a tremendous effect.  The cool crisp linens are so calming and peaceful.

Tip #3
Lighting is key!

Add color to your bedroom through the use of lovely lamps like this orange beauty.

I love putting chandeliers in bedrooms.  This piece is perfect for all of you lovers of contemporary design out there.

The gorgeous chandelier in this bedroom is the perfect compliment to the rest of the regal setting.  So classic and luxurious!

Tip #4
Select great nightstands! Remember ~ they don’t always have to match.

I heart these vintage suitcases stacked on top of each other to create a bedside table.  Muy fabuloso!

How cool is this?  They used a small ottoman with a silver tray on top to create a nightstand.  I also love the combination of pink, black & white.  This looks like a room I would create for my daughter for her teenage years.  I think I would do a fabric Roman shade instead of the woven wood window treatment.

Birthday Wishlist: Day 8

A beautiful bedside table.

A bedside table can help make or break a bedroom.  I often like to mix & match.  However, when you find something really fabulous, I say go for two!  Take these fabulous options by Hickory Chair for example.  The first one is their reed & ribbon chest.  It’s just stunning.  Hickory Chair offers this piece in a variety of wood & hand painted finishes.  The second is the Normandy chest.   I love the scallopped top & antique feel.  I’m getting ready to show these to a client as options on either side of an iron bed for a guest bedroom.  I’m specifying a parchment finish with gold leaf detailing.  SO excited to see which one they pick & how it turns out!  I will keep you posted.

Simple Master Bedroom

Today’s Design Dilemma:  Ideas for creating a peaceful master bedroom retreat

Calming colors of gold & green chosen in soothing tones create a peaceful retreat for this master bedroom.  Drama is present with the high contrast of the dark rich woods with the cool tones of the color palette.  The 4 poster bed draws your eye up and makes quite a statement in the room.  Keep it simple on the accessories.  Too much clutter will take away from the restful atmosphere.  Use sleek silver photo frames on nightstands to showcase family photos.  Black & white photos would keep in line with the clean sophisticated look of the room & also offer a classic touch to your decor.    We’ve dressed the windows with simple drapery panels hung on fabulous rich wood rods & rings for a clean sophisticated look.  A small straight lined club chair & end table were added to define a sitting area for the room.  No rug is needed since the flooring that was chosen is a high quality neutral carpet with a sturdy pad.
