New Video: Stylish Family Friendly Design

8_22_14

Tips for a Stylish Family Friendly Design:

1)    Keep your larger pieces neutral to allow you flexibility to switch out your accent colors more easily in the future.

2)    Use an upholstered ottoman as a cocktail table.  This is great for family’s with little ones.  There are no sharp edges for them to get hurt on.  Leather is super durable & you won’t worry when your kids or hubby kick their feet up on it.

3)    Make it unique.  The lamp shades on these lamps can be painted any Benjamin Moore paint color.  It’s a great way to make a statement & bring color into your space.  Feel like changing your accent color in the future?  Just paint the shades to go with your new palette.

4) Play with pattern on your chairs, pillows & accessories.  Polka dots are the latest pattern trend.  We love this sophisticated version on the chairs we’ve used in this vignette.

Get inspired to start your family room makeover today!  Everything featured in our set on GMT on Friday is now in stock at IBB!

Wall Treatments: In or Out?

I’m often asked about how I feel about accent walls and wall treatments. Should people use them or not? Yes! I am a fan of accents & wall treatments. I actually have an entire board on Pinterest dedicated to wall treatments. Of course, how they are applied and interpreted in a design is very important to the overall success of a room. Whether its paint, wallpaper or that you upholster your walls, wall treatments can be a beautiful way to take your room’s design to the next level. Here are a few ways we’ve used wall treatments in our designs.

Master Bedroom: Large scale pattern painted on the wall behind the bed to create a focal point.
20130829-082320.jpg
Kid’s bedroom: We took the dot pattern we used on the bed skirt & bedding & blew up the scale to create a fun feature wall behind the bed.
20130829-082456.jpg
Master bedroom: To create contrast behind the white upholstered bed, we painted the wall a deep gray. Then, we painted a fretwork outline to define the wall.

Kid’s room in progress: We upholstered the bed wall in a super cute embroidered “I love you” fabric in navy & white and painted the rest of the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Symphony Blue. I can’t wait to see the finished room!

Do you have a Pinterest account? If not, you should consider getting one! It’s a fabulous tool to use for inspiration & stay on top of trends & what’s hot in design. I also love it for great recipes, fashion, crafts & so much more! Speaking of trends, make sure you also follow my board for the High Point Home Furnishings Fall 2013 Style Spotter contest. From October 17th – 24th I’ll be pinning my top 25 favorite finds from market along with eight other of the country’s top designers. Find out more here..

4th of July Favorites

We love to grill & cook lots of yummy food for our family & friends.  You may want to try one of our favorite 4th of July inspired burgers.  Or, how about whipping up this Tres Leches cake?  It’s always a a real crowd pleaser.  We usually make it for the 4th or our Labor Day BBQ.  It’s fun to decorate it with fresh berries for some fun patriotic color!  For the 4th, we place the strawberries & blueberries in a flag design.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 9 egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 9 egg whites
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 (5 ounce) can evaporated milk
  • 1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1 cup white sugar

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13 inch pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks one at a time, beating well with each addition, then stir in the vanilla. Sift together the flour and baking powder. Add the flour mixture alternately with the milk; beat well after each addition. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar until whites form stiff peaks. Gently fold the egg whites into the cake batter using a rubber spatula. Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared pan.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool.
  4. In a small bowl, stir together the 2 cups heavy cream, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. Pour the mixture over the cake until it wont absorb any more. You may have 1/3 to 1/4 left over. That’s okay.
  5. Combine the whipped cream and sugar, spread over soaked cake and decorate with strawberries & blueberries.  Refrigerate cake until serving.

In honor of the 4th of July, let’s talk about some  All-American colors!  Friday on Good Morning Texas, I showed you different ways you could incorporate the classic red, white & blue color palette into your home.  Whether you choose a neutral base & add doses of red, white & blue thru your accessories or you use the fresh colors in larger amounts on your bigger pieces, these colors will help you create a design that will make you feel happy.

Here are a few more of my favorite red, white & blue decor ideas for your home:

Barbara Barry & Goodies from Global Views

I was so excited to receive a sneak peek at Barbara Barry’s  new accessory introductions for Global Views that I had to share it with you all right away!  The elegant line contains ceramics, trays, boxes and other fabulous accessories that depict the timeless sophistication that Ms. Barry is known for.  She has selected an assortment of amazing finishes including laquer, leather & silver leaf detailing.

Script Oval Tray in Ivory

This might be my favorite piece.  I love to add a tray to a room.  They are so versatile.  Display pretty perfume bottles on them in your bathroom or use them to group or organize cell phones, keys, pens & to-do lists.  Bring them out to entertain with when you have a party or use it to serve your sweetie coffee or breakfast in bed.  Set one up in a guest room on a nightstand or dresser with items to make your guests feel welcome (fresh cookies, magazines, bottled water & a toothbrush & toothpaste).

Banded ceramic vase & Polished Tazza in white

You know I love to entertain, so of course I love this vase & footed serving piece.  They have such a fresh clean look.  I can just imagine displaying a fresh bouquet of flowers in the vase & arranging yummy muffins on the serving piece to have coffee with girlfriends.

Luxe Organizer in Ivory laquer

This sleek set of laquered boxes offer both form & fuction.  Perfectly sized to conceal pens, pencils, keys, or jewelry this should be on everyone’s “must have” list.

Global Views is one of my absolute favorite home accessory lines.  They also happen to be one of my favorite showrooms to visit at market.  I can’t wait to see them this weekend when we embark on our bi-annual shopping spree in North Carolina for home furnishings & accessories for IBB.  Market is like fashion week for the interior design industry.  I’m like a kid in a candy store there.  By the end of the trip, my head is usually spinning from all of the fabulous finds that caught my eye.

If you aren’t already, make sure to follow me on Twitter to get instant updates & see all the great things I found at market next week!  http://www.twitter.com/designershay

AND, if you’re a designer & you’ll be at market, you won’t want to miss our Tweetup at Global Views on Sunday, April 18th.  Click here for details & to RSVP.

White Hot!

Today on Good Morning Texas, I featured a sofa by Century that has everyone around IBB white hot!  With style that seems to channel Chanel, this beauty will have you swooning when you see it in person.  The hand painted white chairs & leather cocktail ottoman are also by Century.

Wedding Details: Fireworks, Favors, Place Cards & Menu Cards

I had so much fun planning all of the details of our winter wedding.  We enjoyed every minute of the ceremony & celebration.  I took on the task of planning & designing all of the aspects of our wedding myself.  I spent countless hours scouring the internet & preparing for our big day and ways to make it personal.   I want to share my resources & ideas with you in hopes that it may lead you to find something you might be searching for.  Whether you’re planning your own big day or a special event in your life, I hope you’ll find these resources useful.

To me, a sparkler send off was the perfect way to end our evening.  The guests got a real kick out of it & it made for some wonderful photos!  We placed the sparklers in a vase at our reception with a sign that said “Light the way for Brian & Shay”.  I found the extra long 36″ wedding sparklers here.

This hand molded solid white chocolate cake was our favor to our guests.  It’s actually a replica of our wedding cake.  I found the chocolatier at the Dallas Market Center while I was there for the home & accessory market.  I was so impressed by their work.  I ended up sitting down with them & coming up with the chocolate cake replica as the perfect take home treat for our guests.

Our menu cards were one of my favorite decor items for our wedding.  I had this vision in my mind of what I wanted, but I just couldn’t find it.  So, I began the hunt to find the right items to put it together myself.  Then, I stumbled upon the paper & envelopes at Hearts Desire (a local gift shop in Frisco).  The paper’s edge is tattered &  lined in a metallic gold.  The envelope is a soft light gold.  I also bought the 2″ gold ribbon from them.  I found the rhinestone buckles on-line here.  I think they really make the menu card & add a touch of bling!

I loved our place cards!  I thought the snowflakes added the perfect little touch for a winter wedding.  The lower right of the card reads “Please be seeded”.  The snowflake is embedded with wildflower seeds.  The guests could take their place card home & plant the snowflake & later enjoy their very own flower garden.  So very eco-chic!  I found them on-line here.

There’s lots more to come!  Stay tuned for more wedding details…

Birthday Wishlist: Day 9

Fun with neutrals.

Secret Office…

Today’s Design Dilemma:
Dear Shay,

I need to create a home office, but I don’t have an actual room to use.  We just need a place to pay bills & place a laptop.  How can I create an “office space” in our home?

-Melanie R.

Melanie,
No worries!  Why don’t you try adding a secretary?  No, not a person!  Although, who wouldn’t want that?  I’m referring to a secretary like the one pictured to the left.  You’ll get the office function without taking up much space.  The best part about a secretary piece is that you can conceal all of your “office clutter” by simply closing the drop down desk portion.  A secretary offers all of the functions of a desk in a more compact environment.

This secretary is by Hickory Chair.  It’s so simple and sophisticated.  It could easily be incorporated into your family room, bedroom, or even a wide hallway.  The white finish is so fresh & could work seamlessly with almost any style.  The clean straight lines, ample storage & stylish look make this a fabulous choice for an impromptu home office!  Happy decorating!
