Selected as Pinterest Style Spotter

The High Point Market recruited eight home fashion trendsetters to showcase their favorite products and top trends at the April show and I was selected to be one of those.
What does this mean? I’ll be pinning as I walk the show, and capture images of my favorite looks and on-trend products. I will list the exhibitor’s name and showroom number as I pin.  QR codes and URLs will also be given for these featured exhibitors.

You can be involved, too! Just vote for me as your favorite Style Spotter, by simply following me on Pinterest, and generating “likes” or by re-pinning my market photos to your own Pinterest boards. At the end of Market, the most popular Style Spotter pinboard will win a free trip to the October High Point Market!
Help me out by pinning away! After all, I am shopping for you…

2011 is Tickled Pink!

If you follow me on Twitter, then you probably already know that the 2011 color of the year is Honeysuckle.  I announced it after receiving the press release from Pantone back in December.  The reddish pink hue was selected by Pantone, the global authority on color, as the “It” color for 2011.  While I think the color is fabulous, I think it has it’s limitations when it comes to interior design. Although, I could see interior designer Jonathan Adler having some fun with this color.   It’s vibrant & it’s bold.  I foresee this being more of an accent color than a color one would want to live with in abundance.  I think my husband would straight up give me the *side eye* if I told him we were painting any room in our house this color or using this color for our family room sofa fabric.  That wouldn’t fly in my house & certainly not in most of my clients homes.

Where it could work in abundance:
1) Teenage girl’s room
2) A fun vibrant nursery
3) In the home of a very creative person with a playful side that most likely lives alone
4) a very chic & girly closet (see Barbie’s closet below)

1) Gray ~ any shade of gray would be breathtaking with the color!  Gray is a fabulous neutral and can definitely take on the task of grounding this “look at me” shade of pink.
2) White ~ for a fresh approach, contrast this color with a bright white.  Honeysuckle would really “POP” against a white like Benjamin Moore’s Decorator’s White or Gardenia.
3) Turquoise ~ The color of the year for 2010!  This 2 colors would be fabulous together!
4) Black ~ Black would also act as a grounding color for Honeysuckle

Where to use it as an accent:
1) Art
2) Pillows
3) a rug
4) lamp

Check out Honeysuckle in action in some of these interiors!

So, what do you think?  Is honeysuckle a good fit for your home or a better fit for your wardrobe?

Color Trends

Dear Designer Detective,
What are the latest color combinations for home decorating? What combinations do you view as timeless?

~Holly

Dear Holly,
What a great question!  I love talking about color.  My favorite new hot color combination right now is turquoise & tangerine.  It’s even fun to say them together, right?  Various shades or orange and aqua are showing up all over the design world.  I just love the two colors together, but they’re being used solo a lot as well.  Here’s a few examples:

Fall fabrics from Schumacher

Showroom from Global Views featuring orange

Home office @ a Highland Homes model home

Turquoise glass tiles

As far as classics go, you can never go wrong with a neutral color palette.  They can be changed & updated by simply adding sparks of color using pillows, art or small accessories.

If you’d like to get really technical concerning color palettes, Pantone is where to get all of the expert information.  They have spent a considerable amount of effort & energy into combining stunning colors to create a trend forecast for 2010 including a sampling of colors that create 4 different color palettes.  See below.
