Market Recap: That’s Genius! Part One

I just got back to Dallas from furniture market in High Point, North Carolina.  I have TONS to share with you!  I’m trying to play catch up from being gone for a week, so today I will fancy you with something I found at market that I thought was pure genius!  It’s one of those things where you say to yourself, “I can’t believe someone hadn’t already thought of that!”.  I’ve never seen it done before with any of the lines we carry.  If you’ve seen it before, let me know.  It’s such a simple concept, that it could very well already be out there.

It’s a sectional where the chaise lounge can be moved from side to side.  The end of the chaise is an ottoman.  So, if you need the chaise to be on the other side, you just move the ottoman & reverse the cushions.  Talk about form & function!  So clever!  It’s a great investment for those who move around a lot or for those who just like to re-arrange their furniture a lot.  It’s so versatile, that you can configure it to fit almost any room.

It’s usually a challenge to buy sectionals for our store because it’s a gamble that the configuration could fit in a variety of spaces.  This takes the gamble out of it!  So excited to have found this from a line we carry & can’t wait to get it in to our store!

Barbara Barry & Goodies from Global Views

I was so excited to receive a sneak peek at Barbara Barry’s  new accessory introductions for Global Views that I had to share it with you all right away!  The elegant line contains ceramics, trays, boxes and other fabulous accessories that depict the timeless sophistication that Ms. Barry is known for.  She has selected an assortment of amazing finishes including laquer, leather & silver leaf detailing.

Script Oval Tray in Ivory

This might be my favorite piece.  I love to add a tray to a room.  They are so versatile.  Display pretty perfume bottles on them in your bathroom or use them to group or organize cell phones, keys, pens & to-do lists.  Bring them out to entertain with when you have a party or use it to serve your sweetie coffee or breakfast in bed.  Set one up in a guest room on a nightstand or dresser with items to make your guests feel welcome (fresh cookies, magazines, bottled water & a toothbrush & toothpaste).

Banded ceramic vase & Polished Tazza in white

You know I love to entertain, so of course I love this vase & footed serving piece.  They have such a fresh clean look.  I can just imagine displaying a fresh bouquet of flowers in the vase & arranging yummy muffins on the serving piece to have coffee with girlfriends.

Luxe Organizer in Ivory laquer

This sleek set of laquered boxes offer both form & fuction.  Perfectly sized to conceal pens, pencils, keys, or jewelry this should be on everyone’s “must have” list.

Global Views is one of my absolute favorite home accessory lines.  They also happen to be one of my favorite showrooms to visit at market.  I can’t wait to see them this weekend when we embark on our bi-annual shopping spree in North Carolina for home furnishings & accessories for IBB.  Market is like fashion week for the interior design industry.  I’m like a kid in a candy store there.  By the end of the trip, my head is usually spinning from all of the fabulous finds that caught my eye.

If you aren’t already, make sure to follow me on Twitter to get instant updates & see all the great things I found at market next week!  http://www.twitter.com/designershay

Picking the Perfect Coffee Table

Today on Good Morning Texas, I gave a few quick tips for choosing the perfect coffee table for your room.  It’s important that you select a coffee table for your home that not only has form & function, but also makes a statement in the room.  Watch the segment here.

Tips for selecting the perfect coffee table
1.  The standard height for a coffee table  is 17”-19”  (Contemporary designs often use lower tables.)

One of my all time favorite coffee tables!  This eglomise stunner is by John Richard.  I especially love the shape & legs on this table.

2.  Positioning your coffee table:
Place at least 18” away from your chairs or sofa ~ you want it to be within reach but you need to have enough clearance to easily walk by without feeling like the space is cramped.

I love this leather ottoman coffee table by Century.  The nail head detail is to die for!  The tufting & rich chocolate leather invite your guests to kick up their feet & relax.  Do you remember seeing this on GMT recently?

Determine what size & shape is best for your room.  Ask yourself these questions:

1.  Will the coffee table align with a pair of chairs, a sofa or a sectional?
2.  What shape works best for my room/furniture layout?  Do I need a round, square, rectangular, or irregular shaped coffee table?  Rounds & squares work well with sectionals.  Use an oval shaped coffee table when a rectangular would work, but the space is a bit cramped.  The rounded edges help you gain a few extra inches & open up the space.
3.  What surface do I prefer?  Wood top, glass top, stone top, or upholstered?  Glass & other transparent tops can make a smaller room feel bigger.  An upholstered coffee table can help create a more laid back feel that will invite your guests to kick their feet up.

This glass top rectangular beauty is by Century.  Using a glass or transparent top can help open up a room.  Rectangles align well with sofas.  A good rule of thumb is to have your coffee table be 1/2 to 2/3 the size of your sofa.  This helps create visual proportion & allows access to the coffee table from each seat on the sofa.

Amazed by Alexa

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of getting a VIP tour of Hickory Chair during their blogger breakfast.  One of the highlights was getting to hear Alexa Hampton discuss her designer collection of furnishings for the company.  Her style, as well as her energetic personality is infectious.  She has such passion & enthusiasm for this collection she has designed for Hickory Chair.  I could have listened to her describe her pieces for hours.  As the daughter of renowned designer, Mark Hampton, it is no surprise Alexa has such an extensive knowledge of the design industry.  Her inspiration comes from many facets of her life including a passion for antiques, encounters with friends & family & worldly travels.

Her collection is sexy and sophisticated.  It’s not just eye catching, it’s also comfortable.  Alexa explained the lengthy process of perfecting the pieces for her collection and how they re-worked each piece until it was functional, stylish & cozy.  The options in her collection are endless.  That’s what Hickory Chair is known for.  They’ll customize any piece to fit your desires.

Alexa is known for her reflection of classicism.  She joked that when she was pregnant with her twins, that Thomas O’Brien teased her.  He asked if she was going to name them “Neo & Classical” to which she quickly retorted, “No, Vintage & Modern”.  See, I told you she was spunky!  She emphasized her goal to design pieces that would speak to both men & women.  Scale is a huge priority to her.  The room burst into laughter when Alexa referred to what she calls a “chofa”, or a sofa that is so horribly out of scale that it takes away from the beauty of a room’s tall ceilings.

The collection embodies detail and perfect balance.  The use of geometry, fluted feet on some of the chairs, and functionality of each piece are astounding.

Here are a few highlights from the tour & some of my favorite pieces from Alexa Hampton.

Kicking off the tour of Alexa’s collection

Alexa describing my absolute favorite piece from her line!  How sexy is this?  Such a statement!  Definite WOW factor!

Up close & personal ~ This chair is bringin sexy back!

Upholstered bed featuring one of Alexa’s fabrics by Kravet.

My new nickname for this Egyptian revival chair is “The Boyfriend Chair” since Alexa pointed out that it was named after a former ex-boyfriend.  I love the sides & arms of this chair.  Hickory Chair has it set up at the end of a wonderful canopy bed.

The Mark desk.  Named after her late father, Mark Hampton.  Alexa says this desk “epitomizes her hopes & dreams for the collection”.  Considering it’s fabulosity, her future looks very bright.

In the presence of design greatness… Alexa Hampton & I at Hickory Chair.

Hickory Chair = Instant Gratification

Well, instant gratification when it comes to custom upholstery that is…

This is really great news my fellow design lovers!  One of my fav furniture makers, Hickory Chair,  has developed a plan to get you the goods asap.  No more waiting months & months to receive all of the goodies we (designers & furniture stores) are shown at furniture market in High Point North Carolina.  For those of you who aren’t familiar with “market”, let me put it like this; it’s like Fashion Week for the design industry!  I’m literally counting down the days until I depart for High Point this weekend.

So how fast is fast?  To quote Hickory Chair, “Our employees examined the process and have created a process where we can ship new upholstered pieces in just 2 weeks from market. We can ship new wood introductions in just 4 weeks from market.”  Can you say awesome?!  Most furniture makers & manufacturers quote anywhere from 8-12 weeks on upholstered items.  To say I am giddy with excitement would be an understatement.

Stay tuned for more exciting updates from the International Home Furnishings Market live from High Point North Carolina.  For some SERIOUS instant gratification, make sure you follow me on twitter www.twitter.com/designershay.
